An issue has been Injected Into the campaign cam-paign ln Utah which Is having embarrassing embarrass-ing consequences for the Republicans of that State Utah's recent Republican .State convention was controlled by Reed Smoot, that State's Junior Senator, who Is charged with dlctatlngthc entire Stato ticket, headed by John C Cutler, and doing do-ing this In the Interest of the Mormon church, of which he Is a leading official. It will bo remembered that a crusade was started over a year ago to prevent Smoot from taking- his seat In tho Senate last December, the charge being that his primary pri-mary allegiance is to his church and not to the National Government An investigation investi-gation Into the charge was made by the Senate's Commlteteo on Privileges and Elections, which was not completed when the session ended In May, and It will bo resumed after Congress meets In Dccem-biir. Dccem-biir. Immediately after tho Utah Republican State convention a war was started on Smoot and his ticket In tho fight Is Tho Salt Lako Trlbuno, tho most prominent Journal in Utah. Tho revolt wns participated ln by many Gentile Gen-tile Republicans, who havo established what they call "the American party," and have nominated a complete State ticket to oppose the Regular Republican nominees. The Mormons constitute two-thirds of tho vote of Utah, male and female, the women voting there, as also ln Wyoming, Idaho and Colorado, on tho same terms as men. A majority of tho Mormons, especially espe-cially of the higher dignitaries of the church, are Republicans. Tho latter have controlled Utah ever slnco Its admission In 18SG, except that in the year tho silver craze gave the State to Bryan.
