Show rPiR 1 OO OO OOO O Several days ago a warrant was issued I is-sued for the arrest of W H Barnett referred to in the court proceedings II who is wanted by the police on a charge of forgery It is claimed that Barnett has been passing a great many worthless checks on people in the city and has been using other peoples names for the purpose of obtaining money on the paper Barnett is an old offender in this line and ha served one term of three years in the penitentiary for the same offense He has also served several other short terms at various times and is consequently well known to most of the men on the police po-lice force But Barnett is a sharp man and is hard to catch He has a way of staying stay-ing in the city when the officers are looking for him but in most cases he manages to evade arrest at least for a while For two or three days the police have been on the lookout for him but in vain He is said to be still in the city but is keeping close for as yet the officers have not heard from I him About two nights ago Detectives Sheets and Raleigh took the patrol wagon and went quite a distance south I on a search for Barnett The two offi cers had been notified that he was in a certain house in that part of the I city and they went out to find him I After a search of three hours they returned re-turned without their man Last night they thought they had him located and were out for a couple of hours in the wagon but no trace of Barnett could be found I has always been a hard thing to find him and he has so many friends to hide him and put the offi I cers on the wrong track that it is diffi cult to accomplish anything Mr Shide a former partner of Barnetts was at the station yesterday wanting to know why the police did not catch Barnptt He said it was an easy thing to do but could give absolutely no directions a to where to find the missing man Shide is one of those who were unfortunate un-fortunate enough to lose some money I through the manipulations of Barnett I is alleged that he forged a check I on the State Bank of Utah for the sum of 5 It was made payable to W H I Barnet and was signed Shide Barnett Bar-nett Another check was on McCornick Co for 275 which was made pay able to W H Barnett and was signed W H Saunders Another check was forged on the name of Willard Bishop for the sum of 595 I is also alleged that E N Judd was another sufferer at the skilled hands of Barnett a check having been forged by the latter on Mr Judd 0 0 < The case of Al Shaver charged with murder in the first degree was continued con-tinued in the police court yesterday The evidence as introduced did not differ materially from that which was given the day before One woman airs a-irs Carter testified to hearing Shaver Shav-er say after the shot was fired that he would show them how to fool with him or words to that effect There were several witnesses examined but their testimony was all in the same line From the evidence so far adduced i seems to be conclusive that Shaver did not intend to kill Dent but from the testimony of some of the witnesses it would seem that he drew the revolver with the intention of shooting the soldier sol-dier Hutton I is hardly probable that the charge of murder will be proven prov-en but it is thought that Shaver will receive a sentence in the end that will send him to the penitentiary for a rather long term of imprisonment At the close of the preliminary hearing yesterday Judge Wenger decided that it was not for him as committing magistrate mag-istrate to settle upon the real charge against Shaver but it was evident that he should be held to the district court Accordingly the judge held Shaver on the original charge and an arrangement arrange-ment will probably be made within the course of a day or so to let the defendant defend-ant out on bail o < Another alleged burglary was cleared up yesterday Mrs Siddoway who lives on Eleventh East street reported to the police a few days ago that a cape had been stolen from her house They could not find any trace of i but a day or so it was recovered I was found that the dogs had carried it out of the house and had amused themselves them-selves by tearing i up and the remains re-mains of it were found near the house This is probably similar to many of the thefts that are reported to the police adO |
