Show BOARD OF EDUCATION Returns Will Not Be Canvassed Until Un-til Monday Next THE WOOLLEY INCIDENT I RECORD OF IT STRICKEN FROM THE MINUTES The New Webster School House Treasurer Barnetts Monthly Ke port On the Boards Finances Considerable Routine Business Disposed Of Had it not been for the timely discovery dis-covery that the law fixed the first Monday Mon-day after election at noon for the commencement of the canvass of returns re-turns of the school election held Wednesday Wed-nesday the board of education at last evenings session would have canvassed the returns and formally declared the result The board will convene next Monday to perform this duty The enforced postponement of the canvass permitted the board to speedily speed-ily dispose of other business in hand Thomas and Woolley were absent but the other members felicitated with each other before the meeting was called to order on the happy results of the elec tion for members of the board Mr B W Wilson one of the memberselect was present and participated in the exchange of congratulations AN ELIMINATION During the reading of the minutes of the several special sessions recently held President Dooly became responsible I respon-sible for an Incident which takes from the records an unpleasant incident Just I as Clerk Moreton was in the midst of reading the record of Tuesdays special I meeting President Dooly interrupted by suggesting instead of the minutes showing that Mr Woolley opposed the appointment of the additional corps of election judges for the First precinct proposed by Mr AUf the record be amended to state only that Mr Woolley placed in nomination the names on his list The presidents suggestion found a ready concurrence from Mr Hansen and the amendment was ordered made without dissent It will be remembered that Mr Wool Icy really did oppose the appointment ap-pointment of Mr Alffs nominees because be-cause they were not representative of the Mormon people As vehemently he contended for the appointment of the election judges of his choice solely because I be-cause of their standing as churchmen church-men I THE NEW SCHOOL HOUSE I Chairman Hansen of the committee on buildings and grounds stated the new Webster school building was fast nearing completion The boilers will arrive tomorrow and the steam heat will be turned on not later than the 15th inst By having the heating plant continually in action all the rooms will be thoroughly dried out in a couple of weeks so that the large splendidly equipped and finelyfinished temple of learning will be fully ready for occupancy occu-pancy by a host of pupils residing on the east side by Monday Jan 3 THE BOARDS FINANCES The report of Treasurer Barnett for the month of November showed as follows fol-lows Received on account of 1897 tax levy 100000 00 Received tuition fees from nonresident pupils 36 00 Received from sale of high school text books 22 30 Total receiats 100058 30 Disbursements Paid clerks warrantsS30872 29 Overdraft Nov 1 65659 20 96531 49 Balance on hand Nov 30 1897 3526 81 By war of summary the treasurer also reported the following Receipts for five months102159 18 Balance on hand June 30 1897 12305 45 Total 11446463 I Disbursements for five months 110937 82 Balance on hand Nov 30 1897 3526 81 REDEEMED BONDS CANCELLED The finance committee reported the proper cancellation and record filing of the boards issue of 20 1000 5 per cent coupon bonds which were recently redeemed re-deemed by an exchange of 20000 worth of Salt Lake City bonds The cancellation cancel-lation was reported as having been made according to law and the previous pre-vious resolution of the board MISCELLANEOUS PROCEEDINGS Appropriations amounting to 684410 covering the November pay rolls of the boards officers and janitors payments on the Webster building contracts and for sundry expenses were made on recommendation of the finance committee commit-tee The committee on teachers and schoolwork school-work reported thereceipt of 28 for tuition tui-tion from nonresident pupils and the payment of the sum named to the treasurer to the credit of teachers salaries account By resolution of Mr Colton the superintendent su-perintendent of buildings was directed to procure 16 small drawing boards for the high school and to have others on hand repaired |
