Show AGAINST ANNEXATION Commissioners From Hawaii on Their Way to Washington REPRESENT THE NATIVES THEY WERE APPOINTED BY AMASS A-MASS CONVENTION Have Little to Say About Their Mission I I Mis-sion Say That Very Few Natives I Eave Taken the Oath of Allegiance I Allegi-ance to the Existing Government and the Vast Majority Are Opposed Op-posed to Annexation Bent upon opposing Hawaiis annexation annexa-tion to the United States four dark browed islanders Colonel John Richardson Rich-ardson William Auld David Kalauo kalani and James K Kaulea arrived at the Knutsford yesterday on their I way from the Pacific to Washington where they will formally enter their I protest i The delegates were chosen for this r Iil I il I DAVID KALAUOKAUXNl 1 1 i 1 1I I 1I j iI 1I I I itc T j I Le I iiillllhIllL ii I I I i I i ILI1A14 Ai O4N 4c4D tt4 mission by the natives and none of I them bears any relationship to the royal family Two of them Colonel Richardson and William Auld carry some European blood in their veins but the other members of he party come from the unpolluted race of native na-tive islanders They spent the first few hours of their arrival in seeing such sights as the capital presents and were greatly interested particularly in the temple and other Mormon structures They journeyed eastward again at 7 oclock in the evening NONCOMMUNICATIVE The islanders had very little to say regarding the object of their mission Colonel Richardson the only member of the delegation who speaks English fluently thought it would be improper to elaborate on the details of their visit until they had first had an audience audi-ence with senators and explained their i opposition to annexation during the I coming discussion upon the subject in congress CHOSEN BY A CONVENTION We were chosen by a mass convention conven-tion of Hawaiian islanders said Colonel Colo-nel Richardson in reply to a question regarding the source of their appointment appoint-ment The petition which brought together to-gether the mass meeting was widely circulated and signed by thousands of the natives We come merely as Jele gates from that convention and not one of us holds any official position The fact is that we belong to the great majority of natives who ore antigovernment and who have refused to take the oath The population of Hawaii consists of 109000 people and of these hardly 3000 have taken the oath and so it is plain that we are I scarcely a united people in governmental govern-mental affairs How many approximately approxi-mately are in favor of annexation Only about 3000 We represent th3 sentiment of the overwhelming majority ma-jority which is unalterably opposed to Hawaiis becoming a part of the United States When we arrive in Washington we shall present data to show why we oppose it The sentiment senti-ment of the white population as well as of the natives is also at variance upon the question of annexation |
