Show WAS A RANK FAKE I Tribunes Misrepresentation of Councilman Dale Counciman I I HE STATES HIS POSITION II I I WAD TO ASSIST NOT RA PElt MAYOR CLARK Awkward Position df the Republican State Committee I the Matter of Endorsements Greenewald Hustling For the Postoffice School Board and Council Chairmen Chair-men Other Political Mews In an attempt to bolster up the cause of its champion for the office of chief of police the Tribune yesterday indulged in-dulged in several sentences for the most part devoted to Councilman Dale charging that he was attempting to oust Chiefs Pratt and Devine and replacing re-placing them by new men who would continue to hold office during the term of Mayorelect Clark to the disadvantage disadvan-tage of the new administration and all that sort of thing Mr Dale was seen yesterday in connection con-nection with this mater and from him was obtained the following statement He said 1 had hoped that Inasmuch as the election was over the Tribune might see lit to abandon the misrepresentation misrepre-sentation of me which it persisted in during the whole of the last city campaign cam-paign I introduced the resolution in the council alluded to tor the reason that I had heard the status of the fire and police departments when the present pres-ent law expires on Dec SI next discussed dis-cussed by several attorneys and there seemed to be a marked diversity of opinion some contending that the present force in both departments would hold over until the incoming administration ad-ministration should appoint and confirm con-firm their successors and others that as the present force had all been appointed ap-pointed under the existing law their terms expired coincident with the passing out of existence of that law The first day of January comes on Saturday and the term of office of the present administration is not ended until un-til the succeeding Monday it will take the new council a day or two at least and probably longer to get organized and to carefully consider an ordinance recreating these departments After that is done the mayor must approve the ordinance and submit names for the new force and if the contention that the terms of all the present force expire on Jan 1 is good the city might be without either fire or police protection protec-tion for some days To avoid the possibility pos-sibility of such a contingency I introduced intro-duced a resolution and if it should develop de-velop that such might be the case my method to remedy it would be to pass an ordinance making it effective Jan 1 iSIS to continue in office all the men in the departments as now constituted until the new administration can have time to take hold of the matter and organize them as it may see fit I never for a moment considered any scheme to have new chiefs or men appointed ap-pointed by this administration and would not consent to any such proposition proposi-tion I had not nor have not now any desire to as the Tribune says embarrass em-barrass or hamper Mr Clark in his forthcoming appointments but my plan if some plan is necessary would aid rather than hinder him and the new council for it would give them time to consider carefully what new legislation was needed and perfect it at their leisure I can conceive of no motive for the Tribune article except a fear that in some way it might affect the office holding proclivities of its protege Mr Arthur Pratt and hence it took alarm I have in my council career always treated Mr Pratt fairly in every way and have no warfare to make upon him now Since the election I have said that I hoped he would not be appointed ap-pointed chief of police under the new administration for whether he is to blame for i or not i is true that turmoil tur-moil trouble litigation and expense has followed every time he has taken charge of the police force and I believe some new man with no friends to reward re-ward or enemies to punish could take hold of the place and handle it to better bet-ter advantage Again our nonpartisan friends claimed they did not to propose reward re-ward any man with appointments to office in return for party services and as Mr Pratt certainly did hard and effective work for their cause I should dislike to see them abandon their high moral ground so soon after election THEY ENDORSE GREENEWALD Quay and Penrose Are For Our Ow J J The Evening Bulletin of Philadelphia Philadel-phia in its issue of Nov 24 has the following paragraph Senators Quay and Penrose have endorsed en-dorsed J J Greenewald brother of A E Greenewald secretary of the Mercantile Mer-cantile club of this city for postmaster postmas-ter of Salt Lake City Why of course they have The Herald Her-ald announced that some time ago So has Mark Hanna and several others of the senatorial delegations The endorsements en-dorsements of J J are legion for they are many The Republican state committee by its recent action in the acton endorsing candidacy can-didacy or the aspirations of George Smith has placed itself in a peculiar position The members have heretofore hereto-fore endorsed others in their capacity of members of the body politic Now they meet and as a committee endorse another man The question is which one will have the most weight with the president the single or the double bar reled letters of commendation The committee seems to be in commitee a peculiar pe-culiar position As individuals it has endorsed several and as a committee i endorses one But all this cuts no figure I has been stated at Washington that the postofflce in this city was not a state office but a city office and therefore the endorsement of the committee as a committee would not have the effect of a united request in the matter of the attorney would have Greenewald knows this and has prepared a boomerang boome-rang for the people He has the endorsement en-dorsement of Arthur Brown exsena tor and that of Lindsay Rogers national na-tional committeeman together with Lindsays warm personal letter expressing ex-pressing the hope that he will succeed He has the endorsement of the entire city Republican committee and enthusiastic enthu-siastic letters from each of them to the president urging that he be appointed ap-pointed as the man who is best fitted and most entitled to it And Jake is coming up like a house afire and causing caus-ing the people much grief I was announced yesterday that the executive committee of the state committee com-mittee would hold a meeting last evening even-ing but Chairman Dooly denied the truth of the report and said it was not so neither would the committee meet this evening or any other evening for some evenings to come |
