become one of southern Utahs most important cities Resources of Cedar City It was established in October 1851 and has a population of 1600 including Hamiitons and Johnsons two small settlements whIch she Is justly proud and when her cItizens undertook un-dertook thetask at erecting the buildIng build-Ing they exhibited more zeal than wls tlom but the end attained has fully justified jus-tified the means the last legislature I having kindly made an approprIation of 17000 which amount reimbursed the II local promoters 53 cents on the dollar That this school Is growIng In popularIty popular-Ity goes ithout saying there beIng an enrollment now of nearly 200 students stud-ents and more being added each week Railroads Coming In There are two railroads headIng for thIs place and anyone knowing the advantages that wIll naturally accrue to the first one reaching here well understand un-derstand that the object is worth of a grand effort The road that first reacp the highest point in Coal Creek canyon will have the advantage In many miles as well as the best grade by which to tap Kane county and a large slice of Arizona rIch in mInerals and grazing facilities Cedar has gIven us roads that lead into one of the finest belts of saw timber In the state Vast Coal and Iron Fields The best coal and most extensIve beds are situated from seento ten miles east of Cedar City County Seat Parowan the county seat of Iron county was settled on Jan 13 1851 George A Smith leading a band of energetic en-ergetic and progresive men who Ink the foundation of the present city The inhabitants of Parowan were engaged en-gaged originally In farmIng stock raisIng and lumberIng but the cattle and lumber busIness have dwindled away the cattlemen hayIng had to give way to the Inroads Another Rich Settlement Paragoonah situated four miles north of Parowan has a poulation of 360 and must be classed as ono of the most prosperous settlements In Iron county having raised In thIs remarkably dry year 18000 bushels of grain which will net them at present prIces 12000 LIke theIr neighbors they are ble6S with flowIng wells thlrt five In number and I have a bright future before them One thing deserving special mention as an evIdence of progressIon beIng the fact tat twentyfive fg the young people are attending the higher Institutions of t learning in our state On the Southern Boundary Kanarra a settlement situated near the southern boundary at Iron county t has a population at 215 chiefly engage4 In agrIcultural and stockraisIng pursuits pur-suits The protracted drouth has seriously se-riously effected the good people of this town compelling them to dispose of the majorIty of their sheep and cattle In order to save themselves from starvation star-vation The same cause has reducod agrIcultural products bnebalf their entire grain crop thIs year amounting to only 2500 bushels of wheat 750 bush ers ot corn and 1000 bushels or potatoes pota-toes At Kanarra Is situated the most extensive ex-tensIve ledge of Ume rock In the county The surroundIng mountains contaIn no continuation of the coal ledges encountered encoun-tered in Coal Creek and Shirts canyon I
