The present water supply Is furnished by the Sanpltch river and its trubuta Tics from the Wasatch mountains on the east and the San pitch mountains on the west side of the valley and by the Sevier river in the southern part of the county Not more than onehalf the arable area of the county Is under cultivation on account of an insufficiency insuffi-ciency of water for Irrigation but by means of reservoirs and other methods of Increasing the water supply much of the dry land 15 being brought under cultivation every year Irrigation Systems Of the reservoirs now onstructel1 the Gunnison reservoir located on the Sanpltch river juSt west of the village of Sterling Is the largest It Is about four miles long by onehalf mile wide and has an average depth of about fif tom feet It was built by citizens of Gunni5 several years ago and the water stored in It each year has been the means of transforming several I thousand acres of < 1gebrush into beautiful beau-tiful and productive farms The Sliver creek reservoir was built r i 4flc BISHOP C A MADSEN Gunnison last year by citizens of Wales It Is located on the bottom lauds between Vales and IIoronl It covers several hundred acres of land and the past eeasen It furnished water to irrigate i00 acres of grain The owners are now engaged in raising the dam two 4 feet so as to provide water for a still greater acreage mall reservoirs are in successful operation in all parts of the county A number of available reservoir sites have been located different localities some of which are now in course of construction con-struction When all of them are com l > llted they will furnish sufficient water to bring under cultivation the entire l1rab area of the count Chief among the proposed reservoirs is the Gooseberry enterprise in the northern part of the count It Is estimated es-timated that it will hold enough water to irrigate over 40OOQ acres of land and It is so situated that It will coverall cover-all of the high land on both sides of the valley Gunnison people will build mother large reservoir south of Sterling Ster-lIng and Funks lakhas been purchased pur-chased by Mani i people It has been tapped by a tunnel through the hill on the west and the water will be used to Irrigate Iantl farms At Ephraim the Sand Thdge reservoir and the Mountain Lake reservoir are nearly completed Ephraim people will build another reservoir just below the Silver I creek site between Ioroni and Wales On what Is known as the Dry Bottoms northwest of IIoronl 15 a reservoir site of sufficient capacity to store enough water to irrigate all the dry lands on the west side of the valley Dry arming The present scarcity of water has caused many farmers to experiment In raising crops without Irrigation and I while efforts In this direction are yet I In the experimental stage enough progress pro-gress has been made to demonstrate I that In ordinary seasons the bench lands on both sides of the valiey will produce good crops of wheat rye and corn The greatest progress in this lIne has been mad by the farmers of Freedom and Tales on the west side r of the valley and of Fairview in the north For many years It was thought San pets count was not suitable for fruit raising but a few of the most progess f fs farmers have demonstrated that the hardier Varieties of fruit will do iI Fir 1 r tF arrce during the past few years More attention than usual is now being given to crossing the common stock with the best thoroughbreds Herefords Here-fords and Durh ms seem to be the favorite fa-vorite breeds and of these the county can boast of not received as much attention as it deserves in this count there being scarcely enough pork raised to supply the local demand Growth of Dairy Interests Dairying has made wonderful strides during the past few years The Meadow View creamery located between Fountain Foun-tain Green and Ioronl was the pioneer Institution in this line There are now two creameries In successful operation In Fairview one at lIt Pleasant two at Moroni one at Wales one at Ephraim and one at MantI In connection connec-tion with these are a number of shimming shim-ming stations located In the smaller towns These creameries manufacture the very finest butter and cheese all of which finds aready market They I were uanatcappe at 1Irst on account of being unable to secure a sufficient supply of milk but as the farmers are learning that thEre is profit In keeping good dairy cattle this trouble is being remedied This industry gives promise I of soon taking a leading place among Sanpete count s resources I Sugar Beets The sugar beet industry Is now being agitated with a view of securing the location of a sugar factory iru the county Many years ago long before building sugar factories In this state was sc riousJy considered the venerable Bishop C A IIadsen of Gunnison having hav-ing become convinced of the possibilities possibili-ties of sugar beet culture began to experiment ex-periment in raising beets with n view of convincing others and ultimately securing the location of a sugar factory fac-tory in this county He has persevered in his efforts for many years and It now looks as though the object for which he has worked so faithfully will soon be accomplished On the ith of February last delegates from various towns of Sanpete and Se vier counties held a convention in Gun nison They organized the Sanpete Sevier Sugar company with C A Iadsen as president The object of the organization is to promote the building of a sugar factory and thus secure se-cure a home market for the beets grown in these counties Local clubs to encourage the farmers to plant I beets were organized in every settlement settle-ment Beets from all parts of the county were sent to the Lehl factory to be tested and they averaged remark I I MAYOR JOHn K SEELEY Mt Pleasant ably high in saccharine matter I Next season tile farmers of the county coun-ty will elideavor to raise enough beets i to stock a factory As soon as It is demonstrated that they will do this the capital will be forthcoming for the building of the factory 011llers of the Lehl company have been In the county a number of times during the summer looking over the sites for a factory offered by Ephralm I Idntl and Gunnison but it is11ot likely like-ly I a site will be selected until after next years experiment show how many acres of beets will be raised i Towns of the County The principal cities of the county are I I I Mt Pleasant Ephraim and lahtI They each have a population of about I 3000 and there exists between them
