and in every case the entire membership reunited In organized advancement of a common cause As a result the churches as a whole have enjoyed an era of prosperity heretofore unknown aU of them gainIng In membership and beIng strengthened in a fhianciaJ way Such hlS been the prosperity of the Catholics of St Marys parISl under Rt Rev BIshop Scanlans able guidance guid-ance that their present edifice of worship wor-ship Is inadequate to the wants of the parIsh and during the summer it was decided to erect a handsome new cathedral ca-thedral The bUilding will be of stone and wlll cost unfurnished not less than 100000 Work on the foundatlon has already been commenced and the work will be pushed as rapidly as possible When completed the cathedral wlll add another to Salt Lakes handsome edifices edi-fices Asm evIdence of the prosperIty manifest In church cIrcles during the year is the fact that nearly the entIre amount needed to build the new cathedral ca-thedral has already been raised five individual members of the parish donating do-nating 10000 each while many others subscrIbed sums ranging from 100 to 500 The Westminster Presbterlan congregation con-gregation Is also planning to build anew new church so that there Is every prospect of Salt Lake having two new houses of worship before the end of the present year 1 Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints Probably the most noticeable advancement ancement made in church work durIng the year Is that of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterda Saints The year has been especially prosperous for the branch of the church known as the Salt Lake stake This stake embraces not only the whole of thiS city but the Test ot Salt Lake count as well It is subdivided Into fifty wards twenty SCo of whle are within the limits of calt Lake City In the city nine blocks usually constitute n ward al I though n number located in the suburbs I sub-urbs are Jargcr In addition to the Sixteenth ward died durIng the year and George R Emory was appointed to Succeed him The Sunday school educational and social features of the work have made progress pace with the rest There are now sixtysix Sunday schools in the stake with an aggregate membership member-ship of 15056 The membership of the Young Mens Mutual Improvement assocIation now has fiftseven branches In the stake with a total membership of about 3600 while the Young Ladies Mutual Improvement Im-provement association is even stronger Both are out of debt and progressed during the year to such extent as to place balances In the treasury of each From n fipancial standpoint the year I haft been a very good one The good results of the last tithing mission of the high church officials are very apparent I ap-parent Since the mission the income of the church in this stake from tith I Ing sources has been more than tripled Catholic The Cath llc diocese of Salt Lake embracing all of Utah and Nevada under un-der the direction of Rt Rev Bishop Scanlan has made marked advances during the year 1599 and now numbers a membership of about 3000 This 1s I an increase of about 400 over the preceding pre-ceding year Of this number 100 were I converts to the faith while the others were members of the church who removed re-moved frOm some other diocese to this Much of the progress especially In the way of new converts has been due to the efforts of Rt Rev Bishop Scan lan assisted by VIcar General Father Kiely and Father Kiely jr and the plembers of St Marys and St Pat ricks parIshes Durlpg the year lS99 many new and subStmtial improvements In church property and dependencies were made and others begun Another floor was added to the academy building at All Hallows college at a cost of 5000 A fifteenacre site was purchased for the Kearns St Anns orphanage In wards these two services usually constitute the Sabbath devotion In this city an additional service is held at Tabernacle This building the only one of Its kind In the world having a seating capacity for15CCO persons and not a single column col-umn to support the roof is situated In Temple square jUEt west of the Tem pIe These afternoon services are usu 4 ally presided over by the very highest dignitaries of the church and the members mem-bers come from all over the city and from quite a number of the country wards to lIsten to > the dIscourses there beIng always from 8000 to 15000 persons per-sons in attendance At the present time the membership of the church In the Salt Lake stake aggregates 40000 Thi Is a net gain of several hundred over the membership member-ship of lS98 and a gross gain of much more as a good many members died The greatest increaseS In membership were made in the Sandy and South Cottonwood wards nearly all being new accessions to the church Two new wards were organized during dur-ing 1899 one at Bingham and the other the TwentyfourtJz ward of this city The latter ward ofcwhlch Edward Ash ton is bishop comprises all trP terri tory between South Temple and Third South streets and the Jordan river and Sixth West street The old Mountain Dell Ward was discontinued the members mem-bers being admitted to the new Bingham Bing-ham ward During the year 225 elders were ordained and new meeting houses were erected In the East Jordan River ton Twcntfourth Crescent and Cannon Can-non wards at an aggregate cost oC about 3000 One bishop Frederick Kessler of Salt Lake have been at a great disadvantage in being without a regular rabbI As a result the Bnal Israel congregation dragged along maintaining life only through the efforts ef-forts of a few faithful ones who implicitly im-plicitly believed better das would come in a religious sense They vere not disappointed Some months ago another effort toward splritul progression progres-sion was made Rabbi Gusta H Loew enstein was permanently engaged to minlser to the congregation Since that time great things have been accomplished ac-complished under his able leadership The members have been brought to work together as a compact bOdy for the good of the church A steady advancement ad-vancement has resulted the membership member-ship being Increased to eightyfive again a-gain of about twentfive while an Increased spiritual interest is also manifest The synagogue has been improved Im-proved and a Sabbath school organized which now has an average attendance of fifty The finances have been greatly great-ly strengthened the members being quite liberaL ln their subscriptions All of this has been accomplished within a few months and the congregation asa as-a whole believe that the year 1900 will larger general congregation St Peters chapel In the northwest part of the city has taken on new life There are twentYfie communicants I while the attendance at all services taxes the present building to its full capacity Revs Bishop and Scott have charge of the work at both St Pauls and St Peters St Marks cathedral has been under the lJastorate of the Rev J B Halsey during the past four rears DurIng lS99 he has had the work morefully in hand than during any previous year and has made such progress as to need an assistant to relieve him of some of the work Rowland hall the boarding and day school for girls during the past few months has received a large addition to the house which now has fifty pupils In the day school every seat in the assembly hall is occupied while the academy working among the Indians and have met with much success during the I past seven months Recently they completed com-pleted a small infirmary where Indian children who have beer taken ill wili be
