Such Is the storY told or the years mining business in dollars and cents It speaks most eloquently for the growth of the one industry above all others for which Utah has made a worldwide reputation The record made i9 nearly two and threequarters millions dollars better than In 1898 the total output for that year reaching 92111381 but the solid growth and marked advancement made Is not half told in the figures quoted as the IncreasedJutput of the mines occupies but a small place In the list of the years achievements Not only has the output of the mines been greater not only have the dividends been greater not only has the amount of development work been greater but the industry has received greater attention at-tention at the hands ot investors and capitalists from the outsider than for any previous year In the history of the state Never before its one year were such Immense sums of money exchanged for mining property and never before were there such magnificent plans for development devel-opment mapped out and inaugurated and never in the history o mining In Utah were such splendid results 00 tamed in ro short a time as those wit fleeced during the last summer and falL Sought Utah Investments The ear opened with money plentiful plenti-ful lead and copper both gradually advancing ad-vancing In price and chariees for investment In-vestment In Utah were being sought not only in the money centers of this country but on the other side of the Atlantic as well The word had gone forth that Utah was not only rich In mines or silver and lead but that copper cop-per and gold were here iru plenty also Experts had made a study or the conditions con-ditions existing in the old reliable lead camp of Bingham and on their reports re-ports that Undming the lead were great deposits of copper began the scramble of mining magnates to secure a foothold As a result corporations whose combined capitalization amounts to more than 20000000 have been formed for the purpose of turning the old le1dproduclng district Into a copper cop-per camp and that they are actually accomplishing that very thing is made absolutely clear by the operations of the Highland Boy Utah Consolidated United States and Bingham Copper Gold Mining companies tD say nothing or the records made by some ot the lesser lights Owing to the consolidation consolida-tion or so many small mines and the attendant stoppage of work upon them the camps production ha + not been as great as what it otherwise would but what has been lost In that sense has been more than made up In the Great amount of development work which has been performed by the big companies com-panies and the surface improvements mad Copper Mining HH Copper mInIng as a aisuncr lDaU8UY in Utah can be said tD have had its birth in the year non closed and the Utah Consolidated Mining company known as the Highland Boy Is entitled to the dIstinction of being the real pioneer pio-neer In that field The company has its mine thoroughly opened and early In the year It commenced the erection of the first uptodate copper Bl11e1t1ng plant in the state a plant which cost close to 400000 It was started up in the latter part of June and early in July the production of copper bars was commenced Slight changes In the plant were early found to be necessary but a fun five months Interrupted run has been made and during that time somewhere between 3500000 and 4000 000 pounds of copper has been produced and hipped to New York What is now being done by the Highland Boy will be duplicated by several other companIes compan-Ies durIng the coming year and with the splendid copper properties in Juab Summit Uintah Beaver Washington and other counties fully developed it need not surprise anyone to hear Utahs leading mineral products for 1900 were copper and gold Year at Tintic Like Bingham TinUc settled down to a year of systematlo development and the production or the district was much less than it otherwise would have been Depth and copper have been the watchword and both have been se cured during the year lore new hoist ing end pumping plants have gone Into Tintlc during the past season than in any other camp in the state and more new companies have been formed to develop Its esources One otter big mines the CentennlalEureka was sold for over OOOooo and several new producers were brought to the front It was a great yeas for TlnCc but nothing compared to the record she will make during the next twelve months Park Citys Record Park City has aso made ewrecord durIng dur-Ing the year tD be proud ot The On tarIo mine is again in full operation the Day West Is doing likewIse and sev oral new mines are coming tD the front very rapidly New mills new hoisting works new companies and new schemes of many kinds which go to make up the life and prosperity of a mInIng district have been there inaugurated and the future looks very rosy Copper Is also becoming one of the prominent items In the Parks mineral production and reports re-ports from several of the new properties IndiCate that some of the other L rlcts will have to watch close If Park City S does not forge ahead df them in the J production ot the red metal Mercur Output Doubled The llercur gold istrict notwith t standing the time lost In reconstructing overhauling and enlarging the milling capacity of many ot b mills has more than doubled her output ot 1893 and is now in good shape to make a still better showing in 1900 Electrical energy en-ergy is being substituted for steam at the big Golden Gate and other properties proper-ties In the camp and a lively season Is ahead Reports from all the districts in the state go to show that greater activity has prevailed than for many years paSt Gold Mountain Mar ysrale StateUne the La Sals Deep Creek Ophir Park Valley and many other I districts have all experienced the sensation sen-sation caused by the touch of the magic wand of capital and they are all oru I the high road to fame I Since the beginning ot the year the Utah Pacific raIlroad has been com pleteil to a point on the Nevada line bordering on Stateline Pikes Diggings i and the Deer Ledge Ner district and I a large amount ot capItal has been Invested i In-vested down there 1ru consequence The next piece of road needed to bring out a mineral section Is that now in contemplation from Stockton to Deep Creek a section which b said to con tale more mineral to the acre than any other part or the state Output For the Year Wells Fargo Cos statement ot the mineral production or Utah for the I past year as well as the figures or 181 make the following exhibit IS9 1819 Gold ounces 91900 173360 Silver ounce 75H 776W Copper pounds 333638 9GjJro Lead pounds 90iS100 90062 300 Wells Fargo Cos statement computes com-putes the value or the < copper product on a basis ot 12Y1 cent per pound I which Is quite low Lead lis there figured at 3 cent another low estimate esti-mate Had copper been figured at 15 cents and lead at 4 cents a pound the increase over 1S98 would have been 3891814 Instead of 2741956 Comparing Compar-ing the production of the two years in pounds and ounceS 1899 shows an increased in-creased gold product of 78366 ounces silver also shows a substantial increase while the amount of copper produced is nearly double Lead hardly held its own but that is attributed tD the fallIng fall-Ing off of shipments from the surface workings of the mines absorbed by the big companies in Bingham as well as some of the Tlntic properties which went temporarily out of the shlppin list The reports or operations at the smelters and sampling mills are told in separate articles j |
