making event or the industry In Utah The Sunnyside mines are not an In tregal part of the P V companys properties but are operated bJ them Onehalf of the money expended in opening up new mines has been put Into the SutlnJside property The mines are seventeen miles from Mounds a station on the Rio Grande Western railroad and were practically undeveloped unde-veloped until the past Year In this short time one of the largest plants for the handling and screening of coal has been Installed together with an electric plant Three tunnels have been run In the virgIn ground averagIng 1000 feet each opening up the coal veins In addition to this between twenty and thirty dwelling houses have been erected together wIth a 120room company com-pany boardIng house A large number of work shops barns and mine buildings build-Ings have also been put up and the I camp is assuming the dimensions of a small cIty The RIo Grande Western Railroad company In order to reach the mines constructed a branch line seventeen miles long from Mounds 1t the cost of between 150000 and 200000 Ample trackage has been constructed both at the mInes and at Mounds junctibn forth for-th handling of the coal The branch past 1car considerable consid-erable money has been spent In the I erection or buildings and Installing new and Improved screens The mine I is situated near Coalvllle Summit county and has employed during 1891 a regular force of fort fie hands The mine 19 the property of the Mormon church The Sterling Mine This property Is situated near the town of Sterling In Sanpete county DurIng 1899 It has doubled Its output and is makIng preparations for a still greater Increase In addition to the mining of the coal nine new rooms have been opened up ZOO feet of tunnels have been run besides considerable wdrk on the levels The Wasatch The Wasatch mine Is the property of the great OntarIo silver mine It Is the next largest producer of coal In the state the output In 1899 being 11956 tons The company gives employment to thirt1two hands The mine Is situated sit-uated near Coalvllle Summit count The Small Mines There are scattered all over Utah a number of small coat mines In Castle valley Emery county alone there are between twenty and thirty of these mines that are run only for local consumption con-sumption and employ from two to three men each Among the larger of these mines may be mentioned the Miller In Sanpete county the Deseret the Aberdeen Aber-deen the Cluff of Cedar City Iron county and the Black DIamond I In ali these mine considerable development de-velopment work has been done In 189 These small mInes give employment to between 250 and 200 men Ta the credIt or all the coal mInes both great and small It must be stated that there has been no fatal accident In 1899 The extraordinary state ot affairs af-fairs Is due to the great care of Coal Mine Inspector Thomas and the willingness will-ingness of the owners to follow hrs directions di-rections Never In the history or coal mining has nearly 1000000 tOIl ot coal been mined without some fatal mishap mis-hap There have been some twenty six minor accidents but none of a serIous se-rIous character Utah poal Fields The supply of coal In Utah Is nearly Inexhaustible The mInes of Carbon count hav been developed to the greatest extent and yet the surface Is only scratched Manager Sharp of the Pleasant Valley Coal company estimates esti-mates the extent of the coal fields contiguous con-tIguous to their miner at 10000 square miles of territory The veins here are very thick In many Instances benz from twenty to forty feet In depth How far these extend Into the earth Is a mere mattcr conjecture The meaur s S11mmlt county are I very large and with development would be capable of giving an output nearly as great as In Carbon county Uinta county Is well supplied with coal which 111ay be said to be as yet untouched Emery and Grand countlc9 have a large extent of country that Is full of coal of a fine quality Some excellent prospects have been opened In Garfield Gar-field county which Is said to contain a large extent of country where the black dIamonds abound Among the new coal fields that at the present time are attracting the greatest great-est attention are thVoee of Iron county I in the neighborhood of Cedar City It has long been known that extensIve fields were situated here and that the coal was of an excellent Quality The I opening of the country by the building of the Utah Pacific railroad has dIrected dI-rected the attention of capitalIsts to this country The presence of vast mountains ot Iron running parallel to the cal measures render both extreme y valuable and as the coal 16 capable of beIng reduced to a superior quality of coke It Is certain that tleze fields will In the near future bc the scene of great actlvIU The only mines opened up In Iron county to any extent are the duff the Coney and the Bullock g1d Jones DurIng the year 1899 these mines have produced small quantities of coal for local consumption |
