highly mineralized section and while the various I rous distrIcts within its environments are still irs their prospective stage of development there 1s ever reason to believe that the day i not far distant when Beaver county will rank among the largest produces of minerals in Utah All the minerals found in any other part of the state are found in this count LINCOLN DISTRICT The first dIscover of mineral ever made in Utah was in the LIncoln district dis-trict which covers a large territory to the east of Milford This was made as early as 1858 by Henry Rolns and several other In 1863 the Rolns district dis-trict now known as the Lincoln was organized The first dIscover was made in the Rolns mine which passed intb the hands or a syndicate of II noSs capitalists who rechritened the property the Lincoln mine The new name was given i for the reason the new owners were residents of the city of Lincoln lli Little work was done at the Rolns mine until after 186 because of inadequate inad-equate transportation facilities and because there were no means of workIng work-Ing lead ores to advantage The property prop-erty wa a heavy producer for a time and for years supplied the demand in the local market for lead Finally a slump came in the price of the metal and together with the common enemy to deep miningan extraordinary vol uzpe at waterthe mine was closed down cosed During the past year however the present owners have undertaken its development and 75000 has been expended ex-pended In the purchase of pumps and other machinery besides various additional ad-ditional improvements The company is still strugglng with the sturbin element and from ate reports received front the property the water sees nearly under control With the mine cleared the extraction of ore can be resumed and i is state that shipment of ore can then be made that will car values of 50 per cent lead 6 to 20 in gold and about the sme values In sliver It is probable that a large cohcen trating plant will be erected there before be-fore the close of 100 The property was incorporated las year as the Rol line Mining lns company Creole The next best developed property In the Lincoln district is the Creole owned by W 1 Crof at Mlnery1e and B 1 Croff of Juarez Iexic9 The property prop-erty Is developed by two tunnels 30 and 175 feet in length respectively Npthin more than the assessment work was done last ea The min has produced some very rich ore in the pat caring good alues in gold copper silver lead and Iron There i a vein of ore forty feet in width on the property December The December property adjoins the Creole and Is patented I is developed by a shaft 15 feet deep also by several tunnels and crosscuts I is owned by Sat Lake parties Ore assaying 28 to the ton in gold copper lead and silver has ben taken out Battler The Ratter mine just to the north of the December is developed bya 500 foot tUI d and several shafts from which pay ore has been taken The I property has ben idle mos ot the year LuIs Lessing of Minersvle i developing de-velopIng a promising property in the district known as the Richmond He bas a shaft completed to a depth of 10 feet showIng good indications There are other meritorious propo stons which are lkely to become of some importance after development such as the Key Donnerberg War Eagle and Forest Queen RASHW DISTC The most important property in the Bradshaw district is the Cave mine I stands second to the Hor Silver in underground workings and production The development consists of a tunnel 2300 feet long besides numerous crosscuts cross-cuts and sats The mine has been a noted shipper in the early days and enrIched Its former owner handsomely Some shipmentS have been made during dur-ing the past year but more attenton has been paid to exploration work preparatory parator to an increased output this year yearTe Rialto and Summit properties adjolning the Cave give great promise SAN FRANCISCO DISTRICT Frlsco the principal minIng town of the count is in thIs district I has been in existence for thirty years and has been the scene of much excitement In the earl r days of mining in Utah Born Silver The chief producer in the district f the great Horn Silver mine which has paid in dividends 52iOOo Only one other mine in the statethe Ontario ha exceeded this record Aside from paying 4000 in dvi dends to its shareholders lat year a great amount of money has been eI penned in development work so the property will be in a better condition this ear than ever before fOr production tl year tha b fore New and rich ore bodies have been opened up from the 60 down to the 1600 level While silver was formerly for-merly the chief product or the mine the developments of the past few yeas disclosed great bodies of sulphide copper cop-per ore carrying values in gold and they now form an important feature As depth is attained copper seems to Iaigely predominate increasing in value val-ue as they go down Ore giIng as hIgh as 70 per cent copper has been found foundTe Horn Silver mine was sold over tweQty years ago to Jay Cooke of New York for over 5000000 The mine has made a brilliant record considering the obstacle i has had to contend withIn with-in the past under the able management manage-ment of Phio T Farnsworth Washington I 1s only a little over a year ago that tho Washington mine came into existence exist-ence and while i is scarcely out of Its baby clothes it is ranked as a bonanza and gives every promise of becoming as get as its famous neighbor the Horn Silver about two miles distant The Washington has paid its way 1ashington from the grass roots with the output of ores and the owner have never ben out a single dollar at their own individual money from the start A double ompartment shaft has been sunk to a depth of about 300 feet The sun property was equipped the early pat of the year with a iarge hoisting plant capable of going to a great depth A late shipment of are went over 150 ounces silver 40 per cent led 7 percent per-cent copper and 1 In gold The formation forma-tion i similar to the Horn Silver and wit depth it is believed the same characterIstic will continue The principal prIn-cipal stockholder and officers in the Vahintof are A C Washington James Sharp M C Morris Phii Betz and R Farnsworth BEAVER LAXE DISTRICT Beaver Lake is a district of1 get promise The surface croppUigs ot copper are ondeulut development il i yet In its early stages The district is beginning to receive the attention of capital however and the years closed with conSderble activity going on at various properties Thoroughly posed mIning men pre clct that the Beaver Lake district will Ina short time rank amoig the largest opperproducIng cmps In the state I isa highly mineralized sUpn J The Copper MountaIn Jpnc of the mos extensively devel I oped properties In the distrIct Is the Copper Mountain mine owned by the I Copper Mountain Mining 8 MillIng company The com any owns tix full claims crossing wbic are two parallel veins or copper ore which have been traced across them for their full length by various openings lying between a co tact of lime and granite The veins show good width and in the main workings which consist or an incline shaft which is now about 25 feet deep ore has been tong eb all tim waz from the surface A few shipments have been mad from Copper Mountain but the present company is content to goon go-on to the water level and open Into the sulphide ores before making any attempt at-tempt towards the movement of ores to the market Leaser however are working on the property for a certain royalty The are are princIpal low grade but car good value in copper gold and silver They also carry a good percentage of iron making them ap plcblet treatmenty smeiting With a smelting plant on the property or near to it the mine would pay good return Fhe mine is equIpped with a whim capable of going to a depth at 500 feet The shaft is beIng pushed onto on-to the dep as rapidly a three men can do it Skylark The Skylark property recent bonded bond-ed toa Boston syndicate is being de yelgped by a tunnel which is now into the mountain 100 fet and is being run to cut the inclined veIn which crops on inclne the sura e and which has been opened by a shaft to the depth of eight fe feet At this point there is a fourfoot vein of ore carrying averlge values In copper gold and sllver of 840 per ton The eight full claims in this group will afford a splendid roperty a te all e a line charatter of are 1ngood quantities = Beaver L Gr p TtBeaver Lake grup of sh clalmi has been inate for some months Until Un-til December of this year At preset the management has a fore of men working upon the inclined vein which has been opened up to a depth at fifty tour feet The vein at this point is five feet wide strong and continuous and carries an aver gE of 7 per cent copper cop-per 6 ounces silver and L20 gold Ore is being sorted for shipment a the work progresses and from prviou tests on this ore in the smelters the mine should from this time forth be on a selfsustining basis I was ne esr to levy an assessment of cent per shard to properly equip the mine and commence operations At the Badger Mesrs Hading and Sullivan are doing some good work The mine was recently euipped with a horse whim and sinking is now pro gresng at a depth ot abut 250 feet A fine character ot red oxide or copper is being srted and pied in the dump for shipping hippingO O K Extension The O K ExtensIon recently incorporated incor-porated consists or a group of eight claims all having a magnificent showing show-ing The property has just been equipped with a cabin blacksmith shop and machinery The new shaft at te end of a week had attained a depth of twenty feet J J Holland is in charge at the work at the mine and the vein nhlch is well defined and strong being six feet wide shows a average of 4 ounces silver 06 gold and 11 per cent copper The work will be pushed with two shifts of men until a depth ot 20 feet has been reached at which pint crosscutting cross-cutting will be done cuttng wl doneat Work has been put upon the Banty ThIsrwas the original location of the orgnal district which caused great excitement on account of the great gold values in the ore This was at a time when copper cop-per was little sought for and was not saved at the smelters The Banty with proper reduction work on the ground can be made to pay handsomely a the vein is over thirty feet wide and can be traced 3000 fet on the surface of the claims The Galena recently made a ship met pr siverled ores that was very encouraging but owing to the difficulty In getting supple up the mountain to the mine work has been suspended for the winter Altogether the district is in splenid condition and it is se to forecast that ere the close of another year if will be the seat of great activity in mining developments Deep mining will be in order and at least four producers maybe may-be safely figured upon The O K property owned by Alan is ling idle at the I G Campbell preset pres-et time but ha produced some very rich copper ore in the pat I is ave a-ve meriorious proposition The Ben Harrison is another good property but little was done upon i last yearoutside of the regular assess met work This years assesment is being worked on the Copper King group OC DISTRICT This mining district adjoins the Beaver Lake on the southeast and considerable con-siderable work is going on there Montreal The Montreal owned by the Glasgow 8 Western Exploration company i doing do-ing considerable development I has been explored by shafts and tunels Rich pockets of are occur occasionally in the lower grade bodes Shipments running tS high as 32 per cent copper have been made The Copper Ranch group recently bonded to Denver and Salt Lake parties par-ties is being developed by them The assessment work and consder able more was done on the Canadian copper group during the past year The Copper Glance and Old Hickory owned by Sal Lake parties both look like promising copper propositions STAB DISTRICT The Star district is really divIded into two parts he Star and North Strdistricts out when spoken or the first name is general recognized Locations frst alon were made there soon after the opening of the old Rolns dIstrict and consequently the dIstrict rank a one of the oldest in the state In the ear ler days there were several lively camps there Elephant City was an enterprising mining town of about 100 people North Star City was another own with an equal number at inhab Iants The properties worked were principally gold and silver They prospered pros-pered until the slump in silver came being isolated at that time without the present conveniences of transportation the mInds being worked by the crude methods then In vogue were forced to close down But the Star district did some handsome thing in its palmy das and several fortne wee made out of the ground there For years the district ha been idle but the camp 1s receiving atent 1 again and there are signs of life springing up everywhere Considerable development work was carried on last year and numerous shIpment were made giving promise of a much greater production thIs year Elephant The Elephant Is one of the oldest producer I i9 owned by Michigan arte9 who have realized over 30000 out Of I in the production of ores Hickory Group The Hickory grdup is another goo producer I Is thd property of Alan G Campbell and consist of nine patented pat-ented claIms he ore is principally siverlead cring good value in copper The property Is worked by a whim and the development work con siats of a shaft over 300 feet deep aside 7 smaller shafts and crosscuts cross-cuts Aongh district is a I I continuation ot Gold Mountain and other Pinto conty districtS I Among the best propositions found there are the Rob Roy group owned by P T FarIworth and others Tbp I mine is extensively developed showing large quantities of are that will assay I from 16 to 20In gold Values of over I 300 to the ton nave been obtained i Active development work has benin ben-in progress in the Ad Belie Eureka i group No2 Sheep Rock Bus Bee and White Cliff It is believed the district will be extensively exploited in 190 GRANITE DISTRICT Just to the eat of the LIncoln and Bradshaw districts is what is called the Granite district The principal property there is the South Granite consisting ot six claims and owe by a Salt Lake company Consderble development work was done there during dur-ing the pat year Prospectors have been active too and the are numerous properties of promise among which might be noted the Fairview and Sunyside groups Pumice District Besides its vast resources In the higher metals Beaver county also has large deposit of pumice stone The Chicago Pumice Stone company is op eratng a property twelve miles north of Beaver City and finds a marketfor the product in the cas I is considered consid-ered to be equal to any of the imported im-ported pumice pore pumie pumieSuphu e The sulphur beds located in the northeaster pat of the city are of considerable importance The property prop-erty is owned by a St Luis syndicate and has been operated during thepast season by John M acfarlane The be lies inn extinct yolco and runs from 3 to 8 per
