city has materially ma-terially Increased and houses are in greater demand than at any time since theperiod known as the boom There 15 hardly a vacant house for rent anywhere any-where In the city Schools and churches have shared in the general upbulTdIng of the city and county Qgden haAan almost ideal site The Weber river flows from a canyon the mouth of which Is about six miles south of Ogden canyon and skIrting along the western limits joins the Ogden Og-den river thus forming a rough letter V the point being within the city limits lim-Its The ground on which the city is bullded slopes gradually westward from the mountains base InsurIng good drainage while the two rivers b > sides several smaller streams supply ample water of the purest kind for all purposes The location of the place has given rise to one of its greatest sources of prosperit The canyons cut through the mountain ranges made it the objective ob-jective point for railroads en route across the continent while the local features and abundant resources make it a natural commercIal center for the Intermountain country Such are some of the general condItions condI-tions whIch have been at work In the steady growth of a prosperous com munltJ Weber county In which Ogden is situated though one of the smallest in 1 area has a varied topograp which gives rise to varied industries Its eastern east-ern portion is mountainous with fertile 0 valleys here and there From the base i of the Vas tch range on the west the land slopes gradually to the Great Salt lake Two of the largest mountain I streams In Utah the Weber and Ogden rivers flow from the canyons of the same name and form a junction within I the western limits of the city Thus the county has all kinds of country mountains plains hills rivers and lake The citizen of Ogden can leave his modern mod-ern city and in at most a few hours may be In the wild rugged reeesses of mountains or at the shore of Utahs dead sea Ogden and Weber canyons are famous for scenic attractions and there are I scores of noel and picturesque scenes within an hours access of the city RAILROAD TERMINAL By imagining a train of passenger cars extendIng from Omaha to Ogden R distance of 1032 miles an Idea is ob I tamed of the volume of passenger business busi-ness going through the Ogden depot During the year 96452 passenger cars came and went through the depot yards and allowing fiftysix feet to the car most of the standard Pullmans are sevent five and the new standard coaches are sixtythe figures show that I it extended in one train the cars would occupy 1023 mlles of track If baggage I mall and express cars with locomotives were added the train would reach well I 1 r out towards San Francisco Passen I gers aggregating 289356Dneary 3 1000OO traveled showing thQ average number of passengersper car Of the passengers about 50000 rode only between Salt Lake and Ogden In looking for the causes for the more than doubling of the passenger traffie as compared with last year the movement move-ment of troops to Cuba and the PhilippInes Philip-pInes must be considered I During the year 3989000 pieces of baggage were handled in the baggage room of the Union depot The Union r depot employees on an average number seventyfive men and their wages average av-erage S5 per month The Southern Pacific owns the controlling con-trolling interest in the company and John S Noble is its president W J Sheal its secretary A new fast mall train was put on by the Union Pacific and the Southern Pacific making three fast passenger trains daily between Omaha and Chicago Chi-cago About 1500 of the workingmen of Ogden Og-den are employed on or about the railroads rail-roads During the year the working forces of ali the roads have been increased in-creased and furthermore employees have worked overtime to such an extent ex-tent that the sum total disbursed to these wageearners haS been much greater than the Increase iI nurnberof men would imply The stead disbursement of the wages each month by the Tarious paycan keeps money in circulation and brings about a healthy condition or business I Ogden is distInctly a city of wage earners and of homes Southern Pacific The Southern Pacific ranks first I among the roads In number of employees em-ployees This road has been taxed tits t-its utmost to handle passengers and freight during the year There were 3635 freight cars westbound In 1898 but In 1899 there were 4301 an increase of about 5000 The freight cars eastbound east-bound in 98 were 31960 and In 99 31256 a balance in favor of last year as regards the mere number of cars However How-ever by reason of the great crush of business this year many through cars were returned cast over the southern route and moreover the eastbound cars were loaded 100 per cent healer this last year than the preceding year and the westbound 50 per cent heavier I hence the eastern business was nearly I double that of 1898 and the westbound increased by western west-ern terminal in Ogden and its business showed a proportionate increase with other lines for the year The tonnage of through freight brought In amounted to 316529 tons and the outgoing A cutoff is to be constructed con-structed across the arm of Great Salt lake necessitating one of the largest trestles in the world This will cut out the present high grades about Promontory Promon-tory hill and will bring the road into Ogden directly from the west shortening shorten-ing the distance fifty miles This If one of the most important vents in the hIstory of Ogden railroad building Engineers En-gIneers are already laying out the work and leading officials assert positively that the cutoff Is to be commenced the coming season The Southern Paclfi will also make important Improvements in the way of yards and shop facilities The Union Pacific has been shortening shorten-ing its line and lessening grades east of Ogden The Improvements are still in progress A double track Qver this line is according to recent dispatches soon to be constructed The Rio Grande Western has during the year added considerably to Its yard tracks and contemplates further improvements forty hands and the output out-put for the past season exceeded 500000 berry cups and 250000 grape baskets J J Olsen ana E Co Olsen are proprietors proprie-tors of the concern Among the recent additions to Og dens manufacturing Interests is the George A Craig Soap company This concern turns out about 1000 boxes of soap per month and employs five men The product Is sold throughout Utah Wyoming and Idaho The Utah Vinegar PIckle works bas grown to considerable proportions durIng dur-Ing the past year During the season just closed about 500 tons of cucumbers cabbage cauliflower and quiet-ly but surely improving from every standpoint The curriculum has been revised from year to year until teday the essentials are being pushed clearly clear-ly and strongly to the front with the incidental work grouped under a few I headn The routine ot the school Is being simplified and the work of the l children is being improved The theory being put in practice by the board and Superintendent Allison is that a child needs the opportunity and training that will give him poise skill strength The courses in the High school have j bden changed and improved As the curriculum now stands It presents 301 classical a scientific an English a commercial and an English commercial course all four year courses with the exception of the commercial course which is a two years course Public Library asosciation maintains main-tains a free reading room in the city hall fitted up with magazines newspapers news-papers and reference works Miss Grace Emerson is librarIan and the books are much used by pupils of the public schools in connectionwIth schoolwork school-work In 1899 000 volumes were added bringing the total number on the shelves up to 23i0 During the year there was tully 25 per cent greater attendance at the reading room In tiarA O U W hall there is also located a reading room maintained by the lodges which use the building POSTOFFICE Weber county has postal facilities equal to if not surpassing thOse at any other county in the state Every precinct has a sixday mall service the mall being handled at the Ogden office During 1899 the postoffice in Ogden has shown substanti Increase in vol acne and several improvements have been secured The salaries of all clerks were raised 100 PeT year The number of deliveries In the business part of the city was on Nov 1 Increased from four to seven and at the same time a 5Emldall carrier service was Inaugurated Inaugu-rated in the entire residence portion of the city excepting only the locality west of the river year The average number of letters originating 111 Ogden arid handied at C the office Is a little over 1100 per day and the total weight of firstclass Og den mail matter handled per day is about fourthclass fifty pounds The weIghIng of classified mall is anew a-new regulation and no comparIsons with last year can be made as to bulk However the money order and stamp departments show Increase in revenue anti busIness volume The numbr of money orders Issued in 1898 was 11826 This year shows a slight decrease In number but the amount C the past year up to about the mldl11e of December De-cember showed a total of 94579SO an increase of about 5000 over last year TQe amount paid up to the middle of December last showed a little over 140000 an Increase of nearly 9000 over last year A notable fact is that 45000 more Is sent Into the town by this method than Is sent out The stamp sales real revenues of the office the past year were 266 about 10000 greater than the expense of opened Recently a strong company com-pany was organized and leased adjacent property The place Is being converted into a lIne park with a natural lake I lawn Slower beds with places for outdoor Heights Is the name given to a resort In a beautiful glen directly east of the city and reached by a picturesque winding road leading up almost to the clouds that hang about Obsevato peak The Grand Opera house is under the S management of Joseph Clark It has a large and modern stage and seats h about 1680 people The place was ron Qvated during the year and about 1200 of Improvements added ELECTRIC LIGHTING The electrIc lighting of Ogden Is done principally by the Union Light Power company The lines of the company were consli1ernbl extended during the JEar and now reach nearly every portIon por-tIon of the city except West Ogden A line to this sturb to be one of the first improvements of thIs year Dur ins 1899 the company began substituting substitut-ing for the old T H system
