Show A WEST SIDE MOVE Several Large Land Owners Trying Try-ing to Capture the Stock Yards THE NORTH ENDERS ALARMED Jeyeral Railway Officials Interested in Prop crty Across the Jordan Are Said to Lead the Movement The supine indifference of several of the stockholders in the Union Stock Yards company towards the project now turns out to be in the interest of a scheme to secure se-cure them for the west side I will be remembered that there were several ineffective attempts to secure a quorum of directors at important meetings to transact business of an urgent and pressing pres-sing nature and that several postponements postpone-ments and a great deal of drumming up failed to get out a legal majority for the transaction of business Nothing was thought of this at the time but certain tme things that came to light during tho last week show very clearly that the west side has secured a footing in the directory that i will pull for the land across the Jordan I Among the heavy property owners on the west side are prominent Burlington I people and when land was secured in North Salt Lake it was known that these officials were greatly displeased as they held a great deal of acreage on the westside west-side When President Merrill and other prominent officials of tho Chicago Burling ton 8s Quincy were in the city they went over Burlington Place addition and it is said for the purpose of examining its bear inKs in relation to a proposed site for thp stock yards west of the Jordan A big tract of ground north of WhiteLake is owned by C J Hubbard and the Boston syndicate in which Charles Francis Adams and other Union Pacific officials are interested Then there are men like Chambers Dooly and McCune of the Salt Lake Electrio railway company in control of the street railway company and who would like very well to see the stock yard and the many manufacturing enterprises enter-prises that will follow its location go to the west side to help boom their property The strong plea for the stock yards in tie north end was that it afforded better railway rail-way facilities but this argument is now falling through as all the proposed roads run in a westerly direction In fact tho key to the western outlet is tho narrow passage around the mountains at Garfield Beach and all roads runningr west would I tap the stock yards i located west of tno Jordan All the roads except the Rio Grande Western already have lines west of the city and this road could reach the stock yards by building a three mile spur These are some of the arguments which the west siders are quietly using to secure the stock yards to boom their property and unless the nortbenders keep a very close watch they will capture tho stock yards Several options on acreage have recently recenty been taken on the west side on the strength of that section securing the stock yards |
