Show LITERATURE The Century The May Century begins a new volume and in it are begun several new features of what the Century calls its summer campaign cam-paign The squirrel Inn by Frank R Stockton is one of the principal and most popular of thesenew features The long promised papers two in number num-ber on tho Court of the Czar Nicholas I are now begun the frontispiece of the magazine being a portrait of the Emperor Nicholas These papers are by the late George Mifflin Dallas in his day one of the most distinguished statesmen of the country coun-try Pioneer Mining Life in California is a description from personal experience of adventures ad-ventures and mining methods in 1849 on the tributaries of the Sacramento river and of the Trinity I is a daytoday description of conditions on mining life in 49 and 50 The writer is the Hon E G Waite secretary of state of California and the narrative is supplemented by illustrations of a typical character and by caricatures of the time Mrs Amelia Gere Masons articles on the Salons of the Empire and Restoration are concluded with a paper on some of the most prominent women of France Among the separate papers none is more striking than that of F Hopktnson Smith who made I special trip to Bulgaria to gather impressions for the Centum Mr Smith entitles his paper A Bulgarian Opera Bouffe and illustrates it not only with photographs prominent persons but with sketches from his own pencil The first article in the number is a paper by C F Holder entitled Gamewishes of the Florida Reef strikingly illustrated I after sketches by the author Harpers Magazine Harpers Magazine for May opens with the first of a series of attractive papers on The Warwickshire Avon by A T Quil ler Couch superbly illustrated by Alfred Parsons Tho Venerable F W Parrar Archdeacon of Westminister contributes an impartial and appreciative sketch of the origin and work of The Salvation Army Roman London is the subject of an extremely ex-tremely inter stin paper written by Eugene Eu-gene Lawrence and illustrated by H D Nirhnls deKfirihincr the Roman remains re cently discovered beneath the London pavements pave-ments Colonel T A Dodge writes the first of a series of entertaining articles about Some American Riders his paper being beautifully illustrated from paintings by Frederic Remington Apropos of the recent re-cent increased interest in the affairs of the SpanishAmerican republics Bishop J M Walden contributes an account of The Argentine People and their Religious and Educational Institutions Theodore Child continuing his series of SouthAmerican papers gives a very complete description of the climate people and resources of The Republic of Uruguay Moncure D Conway contributes an important article on The English Ancestry of Washington Other articles in this number of the magazine maga-zine include a causerie by Walter Besant Over Johnsons Grave short stories by A B Ward and Caroline Earl White the continuation of the serials by Charles Eg bert Craddock and Thomas Hardy and poems by W D Howells and Robert Burns Wilson The editoral departments under un-der the control of George William Curtis William Dean Howells and Charles Dudley Warner maintain their usual vigor and interest in-terest Review of Reviews Among the special features of the Review of Reviews for May will be found an article entitled Workingmens Clubs va The BarRoom Bar-Room which is an account of some highly significant practical experiments in London and in American cities in the direction of a substitution of pleasant places or resort and entertainment for the drinking saloon as it now exists This article includes a full account of the remarkable Teetotum movement in East London American readers who have followed with attention and interest the peculiar literary development of Russia will not fail to read with high appreciation appre-ciation Dr E T Dillons thorough thor-ough review of recent Russian literature litera-ture in the May number of the Review of Reviews Dr Dillon who is the regular i correspondent at St Petersburg of the Review I Re-view of Reviews is a writer of high merit whose long residence in Russia and whose intimate acquaintance with the leading journalists and men of letters of St Petersburg Peters-burg and Moscow give him exceptional qualifications for the quarterly resume of the literary movement in Russia which he is engaged to furnish for the Review of Reviews Re-views |
