Show THE MILITARY CITY I The Social Amusement Season Opened at the Fort A LITTLE BUILDING BOOM The Sunday Concerts Target Practice Barrels of Fish Monthly Muster Work for Civilians I The dancing and party season has again opened at Fort Douglas under the auspices of Lieutenants Seay and Butts Twenty first infantry Last Monday was the third of the series the arrangements were about perfect and the many guests from the city and fort enjoyed themselves immensely The health of the troops at Fort Douglas during the past season has been excellent but > few soldiers are in the hospital under treatment Surgeon Wolverton the fort surceon is ntlring in his efforts to care for the sick and disabled and there have been few if any fatal cases under his treatment First Lieutenant Charles R Tyler the new adjutant of the Sixteenth arrived from Fort Duchesne on Thursday evening and has taken hold of his duties He made the trip overland to Price station and from there here inside of thirtysir hours I Mr De Breuhl from Salt Lake city is stopping with Dr Wolverton atFortDoug las asLast Last Sunday the fort was again crowded with visitors to listen to the concert of the Sixteentu infantry band Everyone notices what a quiet orderly and wellbehaved class of people attend these concerts A guard is usually detailed to keep the driveways drive-ways open and also to caution persons from sitting on the chains to the fences around the park and from tramping the grass First Sergeant Watkins company E Sixteenth and his party returned from their fishing excursion some days ago They Drought in three large barrels of fish vhich had been salted and plonnnrt nnrl the boys have been having a feast of fish for some days There has been a general cleaning up of the barracks of the soldiers during the past two weeks All of them have been renovated reno-vated cleaned kalsomined and painted inside in-side Last Thursday at S am was the usual monthly muster inspection and parade of i all the troops in full uniform composing the garrison Target season commenced last Friday I May 1 in earnest and continues until iune 30 Every morning at sun up the crack of of the rifles can be heard on the target range and lasts until midday A large building for a club and officers mess hall combined is soon to be erected also three new houses for noncommissioned noncommis-sioned officers and two large shops These and the building of ten large sets of quarters quart-ers now under way will give employment to quite a corps of civilian workmen all summer I Lieutenant Dunnings brother of the United States navy paid him a visit a few days during the past week He is from the navy yard in San Francisco harbor Messrs White Sons of Salt Lake city were tho lowest bidders to supply this fort with fresh beef the next fiscal year commencing com-mencing July 1 The bid was nine cents and a fraction per pound This firm has had the contract for furnishing this post I with fresh beef for some years and they have given general satisfaction W |
