| Show COURAGEOUS MAYOR WASHBURNE I Tho first act of Chicagos new mayor HEMPSTEAD WisnnuiiND was to order the closing up of the gambling dens of that city The respectable citizens of Chicago without regard to party affiliations will applaud the action of the mayor and bid the movement God speed Moreover there is now 3 national interest in the city of Chicago since it is there that the great Columbian exposition is to be held in 93 Therefore Mayor WASHUUHXE will not only iind the lawloving people of Chicago corning corn-ing t his support but the good citizens of the whole country will give him a grand moral support in his efforts to chose up the dens which have so long disgraced Cnicago The mayor is represented a saying The order means business I would not issuo it if I did not believe it could be carried out and any officer who tries to thwart its effect in any way will be promptly discharged dis-charged I is to be hoped the mayor will stick to his purpose Too frequently such actions as this step taken by Mayor WAsnucnxE are for stage effect abroad only and like the resolutions made on the first day of each new year are not long persisted in We hope it will not be so in this case Tho many hundreds of thousands of Europeans who will visit this country during the period that the great exposition will be open will form their ideas as to municipal governments in America by what they see in Chicago It is therefore there-fore proper that Chicago should clear outer out-er gambling hells and prepare to be docent do-cent that Americans may not be ashamed of the future metropolis of the United States Meantime it is pertinent to say that the mayors of other cites would do well to follow the example of Mayor WASHBURXE Nothing is more deplorable in our whole political life than the influence that the d whisky and gambling element exert in our I municipal government I is to be feared too that there will be little amendment in t the condition of affairs until we have less party politics in our city elections and combination of the best citizens a combinaton citzens irrespective irrespec-tive of party anxious to give to our re fipeceive cities clean progressive and yet economical municipal governments pledged above all things to educe to a minimum the evils which make mere sinkholes of I iniquity out of many of our cities I |
