Show A NATAL EXHIBITION VA EXllIBITIOte The Prince of Wales Opens the Chelsea Embankment Naval ExhibitionA Fine Display of Models of Old and Modern MenofWar Relics of Cook and Nelson LONDON May 2The naval exhibition at Chelsea embankment was opened today with great ceremony The Prince of Wales presided at the opening ceremonies He wore the uniform of an admiral of the British navy The entire passageway passage-way an eighth of a mile long leading to the spot from which the Prince of Wales declared the exhibition opened was lined by celebrated naval and military officers to the rear of whom a strong force of blue jackets and marines presented arms as the royal party passed The Prince and Princess i Prin-cess of Wales were conducted to a dais I after which the archbishop of Canterbury me forward and uttered a prayer for the success of the exhibition the prosperity and peace of the country and the health of the royal family The Prince of Wales then replied to an address of the officers of the exhibition after which the Princess of Wales turned the tiny switch in front of a miniture model of the Eddystone light house There was a flash from the top of the light house and the exhibition was formally declared opened There was a flash from the top of the lighthouse a cannon shot from one of the model menofwar on the grounds the bands played God Save the Queen and the exhibition was formally declared open It covers an area of over fifteen acres The i model of the Eddystone lighthouse is lighted by electricity to the extent of half hal a million candle power The model is built of a framework of iron covered with American expanded wire over which cement I ce-ment is laid The tower part is used for I the exhibit of lighthouse and signalling ap nalng I paratus while the top reached by elevators eleva-tors affords a good observatory One of I the most interesting features of the exhi bition is a fullsized model of Nelsons famous fa-mous flagship the Victory furnished I I throughout with guns and accoutrements of Nelsons day On the lake it is proposed to give each day a mimic naval battle be tween minatura ironclad menofwar including in-cluding torpedo attacks submarine mining fireworks etc In the arena saiors mining give exhibition drills and the handling of naval machine guns will be shown The main exhibition building is divided into nine galleries each named after some celebrated sailor There are interesting collections of old naval relics and relics of various arctic expeditions and the art section sec-tion contains the finest collection of naval pictures ever brought together There are hundreds of models of old and new warships war-ships and innumerable charts ancient and modern are being hung on the walls of the galleries A varieties of ordnance and ammunition of all kinds are exhibited Among the naval curiosities which may be seen on exhibition are Captain Cooks waistcoat the washstand used by Nelson at sea the figurehead of the Shannon carried on that ship during her memorable encounter with the Chesapeake the Duke of Edinburghs curious collection of silver ships a portion of the main mast of the Victory pierced by a cannon ball at the battle of Trafalgar and many other relics One gallery is devoted to trade exhibits and exhibits from different naval charities Then tnere is another devoted to models of vessels from tho date of the Great Harry down with illustrations of boat lowering and life saying say-ing apparatus now in use another devoted de-voted to ancient and modern orduanco including in-cluding the very latest quick firing guns The Camperdown gallery contains chiefly dynomob and air compressing machines for working torpedoes and an immense glass diving tank and a large collection of iron and steel armor plates The profits of the exhibition will be given to various naval charities |
