Home Economics j Shown in School Home economics, the great therne of women's clubs, upon which faith is beinp pinned to aid in reducing the high cost of living, was practically exemplified last week in the demonstration of the work of the domestic science department of the West high school. The fruits of the four-year course, two of which are devoted to cooking and two to sewing and millinery, were shown In neat rows of the finished work of the pupils pu-pils of the past year in the different classes in sewing, In displays of bread, browned to just the proper color; delicious pies and cakes and a table showing properly prop-erly balanced meals for a day for the high school girl. Then stylish hats, fashioned by the girls, gave evidence of what training train-ing can do along the line of millinery. Ornaments are made bv hand, the frames are fashioned fn school, and the girl can have a finished hat for merely the cost of braid and other simple material. As a foundation for all of this the art department teaches a sense of proportion and color, and everything works toward making' the pirl, graduated from hlh st houl, nut only a practical but an artistic housewife, dressmaker and milliner, at least for herself. The girls are led through the intricacies of millinery by Mrs. Janet W. Mayne. The mysteries of sewing und cooking are revealed by Miss Florence Parry and Miss Georgiana Smunliwaite. The principles of art are Inculcated bv Mr?. P'orcnce Jennings Thilo and J. Leo Fairbanks. Tho domestic science training we shown In another display, that of the history his-tory department, where dolls wore dressed by the pupils to represent different periods pe-riods of history. Besides the workin knowledge that Is taught In the various departments of domestic do-mestic science and art, decide! talent is often discovered, and some of the work of tiie pupilB In art is quite unusual and forecasts fore-casts real artists of the future. The cooking department does practical work in the school by furnish Ins; wholesome whole-some noon lunches for the tea-tiers and pupils, which can be bought for a reasonable rea-sonable sum, and also equips the pirls for aiding in the domestic economy and the attractiveness of meals at home. The sewing and milliner v department shows them how to make all of their own clothing cloth-ing and to construct hats at small cost to match their costumes.
