The top four finishers in Region Eight will automatically be granted berths in the Utah State ;-A tournament. It appears that, barring some miracle, the present top lour teams will go to state. There will not be any type of region round robin at the conclusion of regular season play. There are four league games remaining in Region Eight, and Cedar hosts Spanish Fork tomorrow in what should be a breather for the Reds. What does Nielson see in store for his team in the state tournament? "I think we'll end up playing Orem or Timpview in the lirst round." stated Nielson. "Roth Timpview and Orem are good Uilldubs." The two Utah Valley schools are members of Region Seven, considered by Nielson to be the toughest region in the state. Cedar's initial state tourney game shouldn't be an easy one, whoever they play. (iarrett has been continuing as the leading scorer lor the Redmen, hitting lor 15.8 points per outing. Leavitt is scoring at a 10.1 ppg clip,1 irw By MIKE CANNON Sports Writer CEDAR CITY - The Carbon Dinos momentarily came out of extinction Friday to face the Cedar High Redmen in basketball action, and the Dinos slithered back into extinction as they lost to the Reds 64-48. "It was kind of a different game," commented Redmen coach John Nielson. "There wasn't the intensity of the previous week. I think the kids played hard enough to win." One wouldn't expect Cedar to be as fired up to face carnivores from the north as they were to challenge Flyers from the south, and that certainly was the case Friday. Despite the lack of intensity, the Redmen looked like a good ballclubas they easily handled the Dinos. The key to the game was Cedar's complete domination of the boards. 1 Kevin Garrett bounced back from a mediocre board game the previous 1 week to totally claim the glass as his own against Carbon. Garrett snatched 15 rebounds, and David Leavitt grabbed 10 to lead the Redmen assault on the boards. Cedar had 41 takedowns compared to only 19 for Carbon. "That was . the big difference in the game," emphasized Nielson. In addition to a fierce Cedar inside game. Rick Lunt scored well from the perimeter to pull the Carbon defense out from underneath and open things up lor the Cedar big men. Lunt had 10 points. Leavitt hit 16 and Garrett added 15. Corry Nielsen played extremely well off the bench and chipped in with 9 tallies. "We got the ball inside in the second half well," explained Nielson. Despite theoverall good performance of the Redmen, the stench at Friday's game didn't come only from archaic Dinos. "We still stink from the foul line." Nielson gasped. The Redmen hit only 8-15 from the charity stripe for a meager 53 percent. The Reds shot a Up for two. Cedar High's leading scorer, Kevin Garrett, goes up for a score against Carbon. The Redmen devoured the Dinos 64-48 to move into first place in Region Eight. Garrett grabbed 15 boards and scored 15 points against Carbon. He's averaging 15.8 points per outing this season. |
