Show Forensic tournament set CEDAR CITY Over 1,000 students from forensic-rich Utah and Nevada schools will meet at Southern Utah State College Feb. 12-13 for the 10th annual Abe Lincoln High School Forensic Tournament. All Utah schools and several schools in Nevada have been invited to participate in the two-day two-day contest. "We've also been approached by an Idaho high school so may have representation from the Gem State as well," said M. L. Smith, SUSC forensic coach. "Counting the contestants, coaches and judges, over 1,300 persons from 36 schools met on campus last year," Smith said. "We expect as many or more to compete this year for in and out-of-state sweepstakes." Bingham High School defeated Orem High last year for in-state sweepstakes a rerun of in-state results the year before. Bonanza High School, Las Vegas, won the out-of-state sweepstakes with Valley High, another Las Vegas school, coming in second. "I wouldn't hazard a guess as to this year's winners," Smith said. "I do believe that competition will be keener and schools better prepared, and know for a fact that some of the West's top debaters and competitors in individual events will be here on campus." Karen Reeves and Nancy Adams will assist Smith . as tournament co-directors. Both are from Cedar City and are forensic students. They will be assisted by some 30 other members of SUSC's . nationally-recoenized nationally-recoenized forensic squad! "Debby Smith, a freshman from Las Vegas, has probably the most important and most nerve-racking job, tnat ot room coordinator," Smith said. "The SUSC forensic squad views the annual Abe Lincoln Tournament as a tremendous opportunity to show SUSC and Cedar City at their best to visiting students," the SUSC forensic coach said. |
