Show FIERCE FLAMES ATTACK GALLATIN FOREST TIMBER BUTTE. Mont., Aug. 21. A special from Bozeman says: A dangerous fire is raging under the high wind In the Galla-tlm Galla-tlm forest, seven miles south of here, and has Just crossed over Mount Ellis and Is now invading some of the most valuable tlinjitr regions In the forest. Aidrct'a saw mill Is In danger, as Is a band of 1500 sheep, belonging to John Works. Another flock of 3000 shcp, belonging be-longing to John Harvot of Livingston, has Just escaped a firo started from sparks from a threshing engine on the ranch of Charlos Hoy. Under a high wind this fire swept In a few minutes across a mile of stubble Into the brush at the timber's edge between Lime Kiln and Bear canyon. Tho fire has progressed through the forest at a rate of more than a mile an hour and has been so powerful that the flames have been visible for several sev-eral hours at a distance of seven or eight miles In daylight. It Is not possible now to get any estimate of the extent of the burned area but It is many square miles. Supervisor Conklln has been calling since 2 o'clock for a hundred men to fight the flro, but so far only twenty-five twenty-five have responded and they have been sent to tho front. Henry Ferguson, game and forest warden, war-den, and A. S. Hopper will go to the front In Bear canyon and have hopes of stopping stop-ping the fire when the wind goes down tonight. If the fire Is not brought under control tonight there is little hope of stopping It, and the whole region between hero and Yellowstono park, including tho Middle Mid-dle Creek and Gallatin regions, will thus be In grave danger. A slight change in the wind would take the fire directly to tho spot where a dangerous conflagration was stopped two weeks ago. Another lire of serious proportions is reported tonight from between Storrs and Hoffman, twelve miles southeast of hero. The miners from Hoffman have started, under Ranger Baker, to take care of this fire. Another was reported from near Maudlow. Just at tho south edge- of the Helena forest. There arc also several fires In the brush north of Bozeman. which may become serious If the wind continues, and the stubble In southwestern southwest-ern part of the valley Is on fire In several places, which has put many valuable crops In danger. |
