Show CHANGED METHOD NEEDED. Mr. John P. Meakin has written a letter from New York to tho -.Deseret News, which thnt paper printed in its editorial columns on Saturday evening, even-ing, and in which he in part says; "It is a pity Utah cannot advertise in an an honost way. that the people might learn tho truth as to Utah and her people " But the trouble with conditions here in this State is that their Menkinizod style of treatment encournges their perpetuation, per-petuation, and tho re fore renders it impossible im-possible to tell the truth in an honest way without hurting the State to some extent. If Mr. Meakin nnd others like him had done their duty during the past few years, it is more than likely that conditions now existing here would not have been such that ho is ashamed to have them spoken of. He has encouraged en-couraged lawbreakers hero by telling tho outside world that there was no lawbreaking. For years ho has played right into tho hands of the law-deficrs by endeavoring to cover up their iniquities in-iquities so that there could be no criticism criti-cism of them, and no consequent application appli-cation of remedial measures. Tho best thing that Mr. Meakin can do toward rendering Utah unashamed of the truth concerning herself is to spend less time covering up and encouraging en-couraging sin in her dominant cede-siasts, cede-siasts, and exorting more effort in bringing these men within the pale of the law and common decency. |
