Show THEIR BITTERNESS OF SPEECH. Some of the elders in Israel, as the Mormon Melchisedcks call themselves, are noted for tho picturcsqueness of their language while preaching to the saints. The "gospel net" has gathered gath-ered in all sorts of fishes, the variety, as Brigham Young said, being needed "in the work of the Lord." And so it is that among the others has como the man of reckless speech. There seems to have been a line of these that has 6truug itself down the history of the church to the present time. Joseph Smith was himself a violent vio-lent ranter at times, and especially so whenever his "enemies" had run him into the cul-de-sac of his own misbehavior. misbe-havior. Brigham Youngs principal indiscretion in-discretion in this direction was exhibited exhib-ited mostly at uch periods as were marked b' proper Governmental interference inter-ference with his assumption of all power in the Territory of Utah. Jede-' diah M. Grant was provoked to strong, language on account of the slipshod and uncleanly methods "prevailing in Mormon Mor-mon households. Hcber C. Kimball became be-came rampant in speech for any and cvory causo, or for no reason whatever. Probably at this time there must bo a division of honors in this respect aa between Elders J. Golden Kimball and Ben E. Rich. Brother Kimball has been more frequent than now, but upon the general average he still holds his own as the purveyor-to-the-prophets of the favorite Mormon pulpit slang. That, however, is not because Elder Rich has not tried to take away from him his honors. Elder Bc has often displayed his ability as a pulpiteering "rougher"; "rough-er"; but perhaps not more effectually tlmn at tho Granite stako tabernacle taber-nacle in June, 1905. At that particu-'ai particu-'ai time Ben was maintaining his reputation repu-tation for being "a good mixer" mixing politics with religion. Because tho population of Salt Lake City appeared ap-peared to him to have mentally, mor-a'.ly mor-a'.ly and numerically outgrown the old idea that the Mormon priesthood should control the community politically to ite stagnant undoing, ho thought it was time to briiv into play tho tongue thnt is shaiper than a serpent's tooth. In order to illustrate his point he said that '"If tho Mormons f-hould retire to tho Arctic ocean I mean should they remove to the Arctic regions and camp upon a big cake of ico no sooner would i-hey begin tc get it warm than some of these damned scoundrels who aro fighting the church would come along nnd want tho ice." If it hadn't been that in a sermon delivered by him in tho Salt Lake tabcrnaoJe on Sunday, August 10, 3879, Joseph P. Smith raked the Government of the United States and Tho Tribune in such "superior" style, Elder Bon "E. Rich would bo entitled to some recognition; rec-ognition; but until ho van put still more "spirit" into hid tirades against tho Gei tiles, Ben nu-ai, allow ihe place f.f l onor to go to either J. Goluon Kim-ball Kim-ball or Jcseph F. |
