Show WHO GETS THE PROFIT 11 L THE PEACH TRADE? Special to The Tribune. KftV BRIGHAM CITY, Aug. 21. Who gets U tho big rakcoff on the fruit crop? is a question that is puzzling the Brlgham City peach growers this season. The growers arc quite certain that they only Hl gel 50 cents a bushel for Elbcrta peached IH delivered to tho shippers, at an expense LH of C cents for picking and 10 cents for iH transportation, leaving only 35 cents. dil The question as to whom gets the rake- iiH off arose when the following letter from lal John Derrlg. manager for the Pioneer fH Fruit company at Ogden, was received !M by a local newspapers and mado public: "Ogden, Utah, Aug. 15, 1910. "Editor, Dear Sir; Wc want to call tho fruit growers' attention In your vl- kH clnlty to the fact that they havo tho fin-est fin-est crop of Elbcrta peaches this year ll ever in the history of tho state. We aro advertising this fact to our agents all over tho United States, and as the prices jH this year are very promising It will bo an Important fact for the growers to got out the best possibles pack of peaches they can and mako a reputation for themselves. We aro booking orders at the present time at S5 cents a box f o. b. Utah points, and we want to get this up lo $1 Inside of a week, as the peaches are graudally Betting scarcer nnd prices graduallv advancing, and tho Utah grow-era grow-era have the chance of a life time now jH to properly grade and pack their fruit, and the peach never hereafter will be H looked down upon ns it has been in tho -M past. Yours truly, "PIONEER FRUIT COMPANY. "John Derrlg, manager. Tho growers havo no chance whatever. They are at the mercy of tho few' local commission men who are now paying o0 IH cents a bushel for Elbertas delivered to IH their houses. The above letter shows that the peaches bring the shippers 2oo a bushel, as there arc threo boxes to tho IH bushel. It costs tho shippers about -SO cents to pack a bushel, which still leaves a considerable balance, according to Mr. B Dcrrlp's letter. At Wlllard the growers receive 50 cents IH n box for Elbertas packed ready for ship- IH mont; here they receive only 37 cents for packing and furnishing all material. IH Some of the growers are getting quite discouraged, and unless a change soon IH takes place It Is quite likely that an In-vcstlgation In-vcstlgation will bo mado as to who gets JM the rakcoff. |
