Show II FORTY MILES OF TRACKS. ; ' - I : To' the south of Ogden the Bamberger railroad-lias .graded and 1 -laid the ties for a mile of sidetrack which is to be used as a con-F; con-F; nceting link with the government ordnance depot on the sand ridge ' to the east of the tracks, and 37 carloads of steel rails arc on the tj road to be used in placing spur tracks into the territory where 110 buildings arc to be erected. ' ' It is estimated that 40 miles of steel rails are to be constructed, j so that when the depot is completed and the emergency calls for quick action,, the stores of war materials may be forwarded to the point of attack or defense in the shortest possible time. Not only will the Bamberger line.be given an entrance to the ordnance depot, but the Oregon Short Line and Drover & &io Grande tracks will be' tide to the store houses, and all three roads will be made available for outflow and inflow of the things of Avar. Thus Ogden becomes the base of supulies of all this region ex- I tending to the Pacific coast. This inland point has been selected as a. military precaution against surprise attack or unlooked for reverses. re-verses. It is one of three cities in the United States to be made supply sup-ply points. I As the army works out its plans, hard surface roads will be 1 built out o Ogden, in order that auto trucks may be omploycd- if the I railroads fail to propcvrly function. In France the citadel of Yer I dun was saved by the good roads, after the railroads leading to the 1 fortifications had been brought under the fire of the Germans. It ' may be said that France was saved by its excellent reads which permitted per-mitted army trucks to operate successfully over a wide area. : ' One feature of the ordnance depot which is of much interest to j Ogden is the fact that cottages for the permanent employes are not to be erected on the site, and the workers are to be allowed to have their homes in this city. This is made possible by the Bamberger road agreeing to the running of frequent trains between Ogden and the depot grounds. Workers will go to and from the depot each day and the place will be looked upon as a suburb of Ogden. h There are great possibilities of the ordnance depot becoming the nucleus of other and larger army plans. I The initial expenditure at the site is. the beginning of a program I 'I which will make Ogden a most important military pont. |
