BASEBALL SCRAPS DUE THIS SEASOFJ Carl Mays and Ty Cobb Expected Ex-pected to Settle Differences When Yanks Meet Detroiters. There is liable to be a real honest-to-goodness tough-and-tumble scrap the coming baseball campaign when Carl Mays, pitcher of the New York Yankees, Yan-kees, is called upon to serve his benders bend-ers to Tyrus Raymond Cobb, of the Detroit club. Mays and Qobb love each other just the same as a couple of strange and hungry bulldogs, and according to members of the Yankees, they need but the opportunity to settle set-tle their grievance as per the manlz art. According to Ping Bodie, Mays lias every right in the world to jump on the Georgia Peach. Bodie says Cobb knows Mays does not like to pitch to ,a batter who crowds the plate, so Cobb is said to make it . his business on every occasion to conceal at least half the plate whqn he faces Mays. Although it is not generally known, tie pair almost staged a rough-and-tumble meeting last summer. It progressed pro-gressed to the stage where Cobb threw his bat at Mays. They were parted by members of both teams. It was thought the trouble had blown over but they met after the game on their way out, of the grounds and on this occasion oc-casion it is said to have taken the combined com-bined efforts of several players and a couple of ground attaches to keep peace. Cobb denies that he entertains a feeling of animosity toward tho Yank hurler. The Southerner, however, Is o the opinion that Mays likes to see how close he can come to hitting batters bat-ters on the head, and accordingly Cobb refuses to be bluffed into fattening Mays' strikeout record. Ping Bodie only recently declared the pair would need watching when the Yanks and Tigers mot. Bodie's statement was made thoughtlessly, but it was enough for Manager Hugglns to take a hand and advise Bodie to forget for-get the Mays-Cobb Incident. Other members of the New York outfit promise prom-ise to be on their toes when Mays faces tho Detroiters, and it would not be surprising if they feel an imaginary imagin-ary ground for drastic action in repeated re-peated throats, to look for some Interesting Inter-esting action.- Manager Huggins refused re-fused to discuss the Mays incident and laughs or tries to at the idea of another an-other outbreak between the pair.
