DUBLIN, April 13. (By The Associated Associ-ated Press). The strike. which began today in Ireland, excopt in Ulster, in oympathy with the political prisoners here and elsewhere, was a general one. At first It was Intended as a one-day one-day demonstration, but a manifesto Issued Is-sued today by the Trades Union congress con-gress and the labor party calls for its continuance Indefinitely. The manifesto exhorts all cltizons to asBist In preserving perfect order. It pays the strike is a solomn protest on which the lives of men are dependent depend-ent and that no occasion should be given giv-en the military for an outbreak of violence. All Business Suspended . The strike could not have been more complete. All klndB of business was nuspended. The banks and tho stock exchange here which managed to keep open during the nntl conscription strike, were compelled to close. Even the officer of tho government departments depart-ments found It impossible to carry on their work. Crowds of visitors who came to Dublin Dub-lin for the Punchcstown races were marooned in Tiotels, where they wore compelled to cook their own food and make their own beds. A few of the large hotels tried to keep open but they were picketed and obllegd to close their doers. Thousands Join Demonstration. Up to a late hour this evening no disorders anywhere had been report ed. Thousands of persons In Dublin still were carrying on demonstrations outside tho Mountjoy prison. Barbed wire ontangelmonts had been erected tliero to prevent access to the prison. During the day airplanes sailed over the crowds, at times almost touching the housetops.
