Show Fine Tobacco Firms for Trade Monopoly NEW YORK, April 14. Five tobac-pleas tobac-pleas of nolo contendere before Judge Mayer in federal court to an indictment indict-ment charging monopolization, combination com-bination and conspiracy in violation of the Sherman law In connection 'with trade in Sumatra leaf tobacco. Each was fined $5000. The corporations were B. Duys & Company, American Cigar company, General Cigar company, Sumatra Tobacco To-bacco Import corporation, and the Sumatra Purchasing corporation. Pro' ceedings wero dismissed against twelve individuals, officers of the companies, com-panies, who were originally named as defendants in t,he proceedings. It was charged that the companies monopolized more than seventy per cent of the foreign trade and interstate inter-state commerce In Sumatra leaf tobacco. |
