Show LOCUSTS DESTROYING TREES IN FAMOUS PARK STONY POINT, N. Y.. Juno 12. Har-rlman Har-rlman park, the ?n. 000, 000 preserve devised de-vised to New York state last year by Mrs. E. H. Harrlman and other wealthy New Yorkers, has been attacked by an army of seventeen-year locusts. Flying from tree to tree, the pests attack' at-tack' the foliage with an energy that appears ap-pears corroborative of their long period of idleness underground. They fasten on the tender second year shoots and in five minutes a twig a foot long will be furrowed fur-rowed for its whole length. At intervals of about half an inch, holes a quarter of an Inch deep are bored and in these arc laid hundreds of tiny white eggs about as big as the liead of a pin. The twigs die within a few weeks, leaving the trees badly scarred. |
