Show United States Army Officers Give Creditable Performances Perform-ances on Horses. LONDON. Juno 12. The most Important Import-ant event at the opening of tho International Inter-national Horso Show al Olympia today was the appearance In ihc ring of the American army1 officers. Major Frederick S. Foltz, Fifteenth United States cavalry, and the other American officers, while the performances of their horsej? in the opening Jumping competition were by no means perfect, expressed themselves satisfied sat-isfied with the resulLs atulned. The competition, tliey said, had given horsca and men training so that when ll comes to the military contests-, the mnln object of their coming to London, they would be able lo do tholr best. The Americans .failed to win prizes, but some of I heir performances were commendable. Several of the Americana took part in the day's events, and In tho evening Captain Guy V. Henry of West Point appeared on Enchantress and Lieutenant Lieu-tenant Adna R. Chaffee on Cygnet. The latter showed good form, hut unfortunately unfortunate-ly balked al several of Iho fences tho lirst time up. Tonight Major Foltz said that ihc quality of the horses exhibited by other countries was sufficient answer to the charge that the. Americans had scoured tho country for the best horses, Tho veteran footman Tuppln, who has thvlce been successful at Olympia. and olghl limes at the Richmond show In the horn-blowing contest, was beaten today by the 16-ycar-old footman of H. C. Moore. Poppy, ridden by Lieutenant Adna R. Chaffee, Fifteenth cavalry, U. S. A., gave an almost faultless performance in the third section of the Jumping contest. W. H. Moore was fifth In Hie Venture Viking challenge cup for four-in-hands, presented by Alfred G- Vandcrbilt. The winner of ihc cup. E. II. Brown, a British Brit-ish enlry who was victorious in this ovont last year, became permanent possessor pos-sessor of the trophy. Walter Wlnans's Bronze Wing took first for novice riding horses, exceeding 15.1 hands. |
