Show THE BOMB INCIDENT Evidence to Connect Fitzer With It Lacking HE PROFESSES INNOCENCE CLAIMS TO BE THE VICTIM OF A CONSPIRACY The Pines However Have No Doubt That Fitzer Placed the Infernal Machine Under Their Window The Police Are Working But Have Hardly a Clue to Guide Them The identity of the person who planted an infernal machine at the foundation of the Pine residence yesterday yes-terday is worrying the sheriffs office not a little James Fitzer says it was a conspiracy on the part of the Pines to send him to the penitentiary The Pines still maintain that the damned thing found in their yard was devised by Fitzer Efforts to find a plumbing firm in the city that will admit having sold such a fixture as the bathtub trap now numbered among the art collections of police headquarters have proven to be of no avail various plumbers visited the police department yesterday and passed judgment Judg-ment on the leaden casing that formed the enclosure for Mr Fitzers or somebody some-body elses bomb The consensus of this expert opinion was that the trap must have been purchased at some point other than Salt Lake as it is an old pattern and one which has not been used in this city for several years back The stamp on the side of the trap readng National Lead company is that of an old St Louis supply establishment estab-lishment for plumbing fixtures Inquiry In-quiry at the pawn shops did not furnish fur-nish any clues so that it is now possible pos-sible the officers having the case in charge will communicate with the National Na-tional Lead company of St Louis Amore A-more careful examination of the trap gives the assurance that it has never been used for any other purpose than that which brought it into public notice no-tice There is a theory among the police that Fitzer did not place the bomb under un-der the Pines window which is only another way of hinting that the Pines I know more about the circumstance than they would willingly admit As I i the strongest evidence that Fitzer was its author the Pines relate two or three tricks that indicate almost an insane I cunning on the part of Fitzer a sort of argument which will please the prisoner pris-oner because he has already casually remarked that he was at one time confined con-fined in some eastern lunatic asylum Before the Pine family would consent to the marriage of Mrs Pines sister to Fitzer last January he was coerced into depositing 600 to the joint credit of his prospective bride and himself as an evidence of his good faith Two weeks after the marriage Fitzer left for Montana on a mission that he would not explain to his wife Since then it has developed that the coyote bounties had drawn him to that quarter quar-ter A few days after his return to Salt Lake he represented to Mrs Fitzer that he had a splendid opportunity oppor-tunity to purchase an acre of valuable land near the city for 600 She was wheedled into signing over her interest inter-est in the deposit of that amount The acre of valuable land is said to still exist only in Fitzers mind Shortly after af-ter this dupe Fitzer came to the Pine residence one Sunday to call on his wife having occupied separate apart ments for a week in another part of the city John Pine accused him of dealing deal-ing falsely with his sisterinlaw and Fitzer charged his relatives with a connivance to defraud him of his money Blows were exchanged during which Fitzer drew a weapon on Mrs Pine For this offense he was tried in the criminal court Fitzer from this time laid all of his troubles at Mrs Pines door Through j some inadvertency he allowed Mrs I Pine to discover that he was shipping i coyote skins to Montana She has fre j quently threatened to expose this game j I unless he squared things with the famIly fam-ily Once in the presence of Officer I Shannon who has been called in to Interfere in-terfere in several of the family troubles Mrs Pine said to Fitzer I I know enough to send you to the penitentiary I peni-tentiary These remarks are the basis j for Fitzers assumption that the Pines I manufactured the bomb Fitzers I shrewdness in getting his money back and his Montana escapades are the reasons for the Pines attributing the bomb to the man now in the county j jail Until some definite clue is found as to where the material for the big cartridge was gotten there is no evidence I evi-dence to convict Fitzer of attempted assassination |
