Show COLORADO RIVER PLACERS Renewed Activity on the Banks of This Rugged Stream I Colorado River Wayne county Utah i April IThe placer mines here are attracting at-tracting a reat deal of attention at the present time and as Messrs Chaffin and Hay are going to leave I thought a mention of this place sent by them would be of interest to Herald readers A great deal of machinery is being prepared pre-pared for and nut in at this nlace to catch the flour gold found along the I stream just below the juncture of the Colorado and San Juan The San Juan river is also being I worked very extensively and many gold seekers are being scattered along that rivers banks N L Sheffield and Jeff Pace of Loa have been down here for some time They pretend that it is for their health and they go riding on the steamboat gathering pottery and also visit the I Moqui ruins but their visit may be the forerunner of something else Hiram Williams Wayne countys wellknown cattle buyer has recently made a trip into this country coming through Glen canyon He finds enough in the many gravel banks to entice him here It is clear to me he remarked that with so much of this gravel yet unexamined that placer mining in this locality is in its infancy Every little way for several miles along the river there will be a miners camp there are now 60 men engaged on this side of the river All have the same complaint It is so hard to get provisions The roads through Wayne county are practically the onlv means of ingress and exit and they are very rough running run-ning through perhaps the roughest part of Utah t By the middle of April the roads will be more open I The new Acme flour gold amalgamator I amalgam-ator owned by Chafiln Co will soon be ready to run and is it expected that four or five months of good times will follow An old gold miner working here says I I have worked in California and in New Mexico and have had my big finds and my failures but here I can make from 150 to 4 every day with my lit tle rocker and do not work very hard I either I think this place is all right I for a placer camp The Henry mountains are not open I yet but as soon as spring comes there will be considerable placer and lode work going there 1 on ere I I |
