preceding one was but this year the company was very much larger A preliminary announcement in the Deseret News of July 22 1857 reads as follows The 24th will be spent by the First Presidency the Twelve now at home and many others from this city and the country at the headwaters of Big Cottonwood kanyon Thousands of invitations to participate in the celebration celebra-tion of the anniversary of the arrival in this valley of Presidents B Young H C Kimbal and VT Richards with the Pioneer company have been distributed dis-tributed by President Brigham Young and LtlGen D H Wells has ordered a detachment of the Legion to be detailed for the prevention of any confusion confu-sion or accident in the passing or repassing of so large a company over a kanyon road The president and company expect NEWS DURING TH CELEBRATION OF PIONEER DAY FORTY S YEARS AGO THAT THE ARMY HAD STARTED FOR UTAH 1 > f I Cottonwood Lumber Co and began to reach the camp ground at the lake about 1 a m By good time in the afternoon all the company numbering 2587 persons with 464 carriages and wagons 1028 horses and mules and 332 oxen and cows were encamped and busily engaged in their several arrangements arrange-ments for the morrow Captain Ballos Band the Xauvoo Brass Band the Springville Brass Band the Ogden City Brass band and the Great Salt Lake City and the Ogden City Mal tial bands were in attendance also the first company of light artillery under the command of AdjtGen James Ferguson a detachment de-tachment of four platoons of Life Guards and one platoon of the Lancers under the command of Col R T Burton and one company of Light infantry under the command of Captain John W Young Col J C Little marshal of the day At 4 p m the Partial bands serenaded the camp At sunset notes from a buglesummoned the Saints to an eminence near the centre of the camp ground when President Brigham Young made a few remarks recounting the mercies of God to this people in delivering them from the power of their enemies In making the desert places blossom like the rose and the sterile plains yield luscious fruits and golden grains in loading the leaves of the trees and shrubbery with honey dew and in increasing our flocks and herds in a marvelous manner After President Young had concluded his remarks President Heber C Kimball offered a prayer of thanksgiving unto God for his goodness to his people prayed for Israel and Israels enemies and renewedly dedicated and consecrated unto God the ground the waters the timber the rocks and all the elements pertaining to the stream upon whose headwaters we were assembled to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the entrance at the Pioneers into these valleys a Three spacious boweries with plank floors had been provided by the B C Lumber company and a large number passed the evening in the joyous I dance July 24 each one began to enjoy the privileges of the occasion as best suited their several tastes and feelings in accordance with the order of the day giving liberty to all to do as they pleased occupying their time and opportunities op-portunities in a manner the most conducive to the greatest amount of happiness happi-ness and comfort The different bands played at intervals throughout the day and greatly added to the zest of the varied sources of enjoyment At morning assembly the choir sung On the Mountain Tops Appearing Prayer by Elder George A Smith President Kimball gave a few instructions for the government of the company in their exercises during the day and President Wells said that on account of the large number of people President Young wished them to attend to prayers at their several tents The stars and stripes were unfurled on two of the highest peaks in sight of the camp and on the tops of two of the tallest trees At20 minutes pasta 0 past-a in three rounds were fired from a brass howitzer for the first presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints and our rights and independence inde-pendence At 15 minutes past 10 a m three rounds were flred for the Hope of Israel Captain John W Youngs company of light infantry were paraded and elicited admiration and astonishment from all beholders This company numbers 50 boys ranging from 10 to 12 years of age and was furnished with tasteful uniforms by Governor Young and truly they are the Hope of Israel At about noon Bishop A O Smoot Elders Judson Stoddard and O PRe P-Re kvell and Judge E A Smith rode into camp the three former from the states in 20 das They immediately l sought President Young and conveyed to him the startling news of the approach of Johnsons armv The most of the people were not informed of this until evening prayers and then there was no excitement ex-citement although all realized the importance of the news Continuing the Chronicle says At about sunset the camp assembled for prayers when President Wells made a few remarks in relation to thelatest tidings from the states upon the order of leaving the ground in the morning arc concluded with prayer Songs bi Brothers Poulter Dunbar McAllister and Maiben commenced the evenings exercises after which dancing and general hilarity continued to a late hour On the morning of the 25th the company began to vacate the ground by daybreak everyone apparently highly gratified with the privileges they had I been so
