Show A LUDICROUS PARTISAN BLUNDER It is not wise to pump to hasty conclusions con-clusions unless you are quite familiar with the ground Councilman Lawson put his foot in it badly in the City Council on Friday evening through failure to know exactly where he was at The Mayor removed the Inspector Inspec-tor of Provisions for caifee and nominated nomin-ated his successor Mr Lawson objected ob-jected on the ground that the nominee was a Democrat and he made a vigor ous and ridiculous attack upon the Mayor for trying to make this city Democratic Repeatedly called to order by Councilman Coun-cilman Hardy he was supported by Mr Horn who was inthe chair and told to goahead Mr Hardy tried to stop the introduction of party politics in a buncombe speech in the City Council but the chairman viewed the nomination as political and seemed I to enjoy the unseemly harangue as much as any of the laughing spectators specta-tors But when the parties to the exhibition of party spleen learned that the gentleman nominated was not a Democrat after all their chagrin maybe may-be easily imagined < It is to be hoped and it is certainly expected that when the new City Council is organized the disgraceful scenes that have made our municipality munici-pality notorious for disorder and folly will not be repeated We anticipate a little more dignity and a great deal more decorum in the new body than have been manifested in the present council and that the respectable citi I zens of Salt Lake will not have reason to be ashamed of the body organized I to transact public business The election has been conducted on nonpartisan lines The appointment should be made in the same spirit No man ought to be turned down because he is a Republican or a Democrat Demo-crat Fitness should be the great recommendation At the same time if members of one party only should be put forward for office there would be a great outcry from the voting citizens who cast their ballots for municipal reform The gentleman sat upon on Friday night is fully competent com-petent for the position for which he was nominated and though temporarily tempo-rarily flattened out we hope he will rise again And perhaps he will learn enough from Liberal Republicanism some day to become a good Democrat Demo-crat |
