Show I 4 SHIP ON ROLLERS Proposed New Form of Atlantic Ocean Greyhound A very remarkable system of ocean transport has been brought out in i Paris by a French engineer Monsieur Bazin who was a fellow student of I President Carnot and is already well i known as the author of several useful I engineering inventions including the socalled Basin dredge which has been I applied to works of magnitude in j ny land and other countries I M Bazins proposal is to construct an Atlantic liner on eight rollers and I he claims to show by the working of models and by algebraic formulae not only that his idea is practical but i that it can be successfully applied to I secure a greater speed in transatlantic navigation than any hitherto reached The basis of M Bazins proposal is i the theory that the eight wheels or rouleurs on which his vessel Is fixed will so far diminish the resistance of fered by the waves that a much greater great-er speed may be developed and he places the possible speed to be main tained on an Atlantic voyage at fully thirty knots an hour which would I enable the passage from Southampton or Liverpool to New York to be accomplished ac-complished in a little over 100 hours It is proposed to put M Bazins plans to a practical test by constructing construct-ing i a vessel of 124 meters in length and 30 meters breadth with rouleurs 24 meters in diameter The rouleurs are estimated to make twentytwo revolutions per minute and will it is I believed easily achieve 57 kilometers or 30 knots an hour with a force epual to 1000 horses of which 2400 horse power is assigned to rotation and 7600 to propulsion One of the leading l maritime concerns in France is said to have taken up the project with much favorEngineering Review Re-view |
