Show A SHOCKING ACCIDENT William Lucey Run Over by a Western Engine The Body Completely SeveredDeceased Vas a SoldierResult ot the Inquest Hold Yesterday William J Lucey a member of the Sixteenth Infantry band was run over by a Rio Grande Western switch engine en-gine yesterday morning at about 545 oclock near the coal chutes in the railroad yards and instantly killed his body being completely severed through the abdomen A coroners jury empanelled em-panelled during the afternoon fully exonorated the crew of the engine engne Lucey who had been on a protracted protrac-ted spree was seen early Friday evening even-ing in the neighborhood of the raIlroad road yards He is known to have passed the night in drinking and haying hay-ing a general good time but just how he came to be lying on the track near the coal chutes is unknown Engine No8 with Harry Newcomer at the throttle and Thomas Coleman fireman fire-man had just left the round house and was running down the track near the chutes Coleman had his head out of the cab window watching another an-other engine which was on the same engne track I was still very dark and he failed to notice an object lying upon the track until the foot board of the engine had nearly reached i when he made the horrifying discovery that a man was almost under the wheels of the engine He shouted to Newcomer to stop and the latter reversed his machine and stopped i within twenty I feet but it was too late to save the unfortunate II un-fortunate mans life Jumping down from the cab the trainmen found Lu ceys body under the forward wheels of the tender severed through the I abdomen Life was of course extinct The head was inside of the rail It is rai I the opinion of the trainmen that the I unfortunate fellow had become intoxicated intox-icated to such a degree that when in his wanderings he encountered the track he fell forward onto his face and there went to sleep Coroner Taylor was notified and soon reached the scene of the accident He took immediate charge of the body which was removed to Skewes undertaking under-taking establishment In the afternoon after-noon he empanelled a jury composed of C M Hammond A H Mayne and W M Bur s and held an inquest The facts brought out were identical with those already set out the verdict being to the effect that Lucey came to his death by being run over by a Rio Grande Western switch engine while asleep on the track under the influence of liquor This morning the body will be removed re-moved to Fort Douglas where it will be buried in the post cemetery Lucey was 32 years of age and leaves a wife and two children the youngest but three days old His mother is also al-so living |
