Show COAL FOR THEEAST < I Exhibit of the Western for tho Frisco S Fair lfit The agents of the Midwinter exposition 1 J1 exposi-tion at San Francisco are abroad over i C the land urging railroad companies < and large corporations to assist in presenting pre-senting attractions for the show The Rio Grande Western officers are arranging ar-ranging to do something handsome in the line indicated The road will make a fine display of its coal and other resources re-sources The coal miners at Castle Gate are sending out 1000 tons of coal dally and the output of the Pleasant Valley oines bas been growing steadily stead-ily during the past few months Last year the coal traffic of the Rio Grande Western reached 3S per cent of the total tonnage of the road At the present pres-ent time the industry has been developed devel-oped until it has climbed up to 50 percent per-cent of the total tonnage With perhaps per-haps the exception of two or three of the Pennsylvania lines the Rio Grande western stands at the head of the list in coal tonnage as compared with total freight movement A large part of the output finds a market 1000 miles distant dis-tant in California where Utah coal successfully competes with coal from Australia and the Northern Pacific I country The Rio Grande Western is peculiarly fortunate in its coal fields a the product being of the best bituminous bitumin-ous quality and second to none in the country Upon the decline in the ore i i traffic the management of the road f turned Its energy in the direction of i the coal fields with the gratifying result re-sult indicated above The Western r makes no attempts to ship its coal east of Grand Junction says the Denver Republican The barrier of the Rock ies stands in the way But one carload of Utah cQal has been landed in Denver i Den-ver ana that carload by Way of experiment experi-ment |
