Show IOTTDERLY IS NO HOG He Apparently Knows When He Has Had Enough Philadelphia Nov 25T V Pow derly resigned his position as general master workman of the Knights of Labor La-bor this JCternoon He was unable to keep the delegates in the line he had marked out for them and this decisive move seemed the only thing left for him to adopt Immediately after the resignation was offered he left the hal as he said to attend to some personal business The step was a surprise to all the delegates although a few of them said it was what should have been done long ago No action was taken on the matter although it was the topic of discussion which lasted until the assembly adjourned at 5 ocloclc The causes which led up to the resignation res-ignation are as follows After Pow derly had been repeatedly urged by the assembly to substitute a new list of names for the members of the executive ex-ecutive committee he acquiesced in the demands but the second list was not much more favorably received than the first one He was most persistent in frst efforts to have it accepted McGuIre of New York was the only one elected and the assembly adjourned yesterday without getting any further along Today new life seemed t have been instilled into the antiPowderly faction and they began to elect aboard a-board that would best u suit them Pow derly was almost fruitless in ms endeavors en-deavors t impress the assembly that he was only exercising the powers his office gave him ofce opponents told him he had misconstrued mis-construed the meaning of the constitution constitu-tion This only added fuel to the flames Powderly would not accept the committeemen the delegates had elected He declared their election was illegal Then the climax came The defeated leader spoke with remarkable re-markable clearness a he said Gentlemen Gen-tlemen you must either obey the spirit of the constitution of declare the office of general master workman vacant va-cant I now tender you my resignation resigna-tion With that he left the hal All the more than surprised delegates were mor tan surrised they were astonished Powderly was asked tonight If he had really resigned He replied I told the delegates they must either declare my office vacant or accept my resignation a I would not longer resigaton a day or two I will make a statement but at the present I do not feel I should do so When I left the hall it was to attend to some private business While the outcome of Powderlys resignation is still in doubt some talk as to his probable successor is being freely indulged in Soverign of Iowa and McGuire of New York are those most prominently named with the former somewhat in the lead |
