Show WITH THE TEACHERS 1 A Interesting Address by Professor Marcus E Jones Subjects Discussed A Meeting of the County Teachers Institute Held at the University The teachers of Salt Lake city held one of their regula meetings yesterday morning In the assembly room of the high school The attendance was very large The programme commenced with singing under the direction of SupervIsor Super-vIsor G C Young followed by some general announcements by Dr Mllls paugh after which Professor M E Jones of this city was introduced by the superintendent and gave a most interesting and able address upon the geological formation of this contintent but more particularly of Utah Great Salt Lake and Lake Bonneville on the bed of which lake this city is situated At the conclusion of Professor Jones address the teachers resumed their usual sessions in sections in charge oft of-t e following instructors First sec ion A S Martin chairman second section D Dennis third section O H Avey fourth section W J McCoy fifth section Miss Qualtrough sixth section A E Knuckey seventh sec ton Principal W R Malone In the first section papers were presented upon language which were discussed by the teachers of the grade for which the meeting is designed Section number num-ber two took up the subject of spelling number three a study of the geography geogra-phy of Utah number four discussion of the best methods of teaching reading read-ing number five a model recitation in reading was conducted by one of the teachers in which recitation children of the city schools were present to illustrate the subject in hand the sixth section discussed a topic in United States history the eighth in the high school section the average age of a I I pupil entering the eighth grade the acquisitions for language instruction acquired the activities engaged in t furnish a basis for language expres sion the powers he has been required to exercise by reason of welldirected effort on the part of the teacher what should characterize his ability to speak and write the English language correctly upon entering the eighth grade what marks his increased abil ity to speak and write correctly at the completion of the eighth year what methods of instruction in every branch will help most toward his Increase In-crease of ability what studies are most conducive to that end and what devices are helpful toward that end COUNTY TEACHERS At the county teachers Institute yesterday terday morning at the University of Utah Professor Stewart delivered a splendid pedagogical address upon psychology A number of questions were asked and discussed by teachers teach-ers Superintendent D R Allen made a few remarks about uniformity In the keeping of roll books A plan for obtaining ob-taining supplementary readers for the schools of the county was brought forward for-ward by Mr Oscar Van Cott It was for the county schools to jointly get a number of sets of the best readers and alternate in using them thereby keep ing the books in use instead of keep lug one or two sets in the library all the time The plan is a good one and would apply to two or three districts in case it county is not practical for the whole I |
