Show i FEW SAVED oi ILLFATEO SHIP The Valencia Goes to Pieces on the Rocks Near Cape Beale Only Thlrtyslx of the Passengers and Crew Were Saved the Dead Numbering Num-bering 119The Greatest Loss of Life In the North Pacific Since 1875 Victoria B COf the 151 people on board the steamer Valencia when Bho struck near Klnnaway rock five miles from Capo Bcnlo but thirtysix wore saved The dead number 121 the greatest loss of life In the North Pacific slnco the Pacific was lost In 1876 Tho Valencia In whose rigging about thirty thir-ty people were clinging frantically waving for assistance which could not be given when the steamed Queen left the scene at 1130 a m broke up about 5 p m Wednesday sweeping to death those few who had survived these terrible hours of privation chilled and numbed to the limit ol human endurance by clouds of spray which swept over them Of the total company of 151 hut 33 have been definitely accounted for and throe men believed to ho other survivors were seen on shore from the whaling vessel Orion near tho wreck huddling about a fire Six survivors have been token on the Sal vor most of them so badly cut up and bruised without boots and so overcome over-come that they cannot stand much less walk Eighteen were picked up by the City of Topeka With tho three seen from the Orion a mile and a Hall from the wreck added the survivors total to 30 leaving a death list of ill persons Not a woman or child is among tho saved III an Interview at Bamfleld Creek Wednesday night Boatswain Mo Carthy told the first detailed story 01 the wreck Ho said the steamer Valencia Val-encia had been going by dead reckonIng reckon-ing and overran her distance SoundIngs Sound-ings had been made three and foUl times an hour The steamer struck at 1145 p m Monday night about midship the first officer quartertnas ter and a seaman engaged in sound ing having ten minutes before gal thirty fathoms Reverse speed was prdered by Captain Johnson but the vessel began filling The captain then gavo orders to have two of the seven bonts lowered to the saloon deck rail Instantly the passenger crowded to the rail and overcrowded tho boats During the excitement the cut whatever lines they could la their hands on The davits brokE about the same time the lines were cut and both boats were smashed nl tho sides of tho vessel capsizing tha passengers and crew In them The crow throw lines out and by mean of Jacobs ladders succeeded In getting get-ting six of the passengers thrown out of the boats on board again The boats when lost wero mostly filled with women and children One very sad Incident was witnessed wit-nessed A lady and gentleman with a little girl tried to get In one boat The father succeeded and the mothe tried to pass tho child but a wave struck her and washed tho child from her arms The child was lost befor her eyes One life raft was also lowered low-ered but It was dashed to pieces After this four boats succeeded In getting get-ting away from the ship all full at passengers This left one boat and two life rafts The captain after consulting con-sulting with the mate asked Mo Carthy to take charge which ho did and called for volunteers and the five sailors who reached shore In safety responded Tho captain Instructed them to pull along the beach and find a place to get ashore They landed at 110 p I m Tuesday and made Cape Bealo lighthouse at 3 I p m Before making Capo Beale they tried to get back to the vessel by the beach but could not do so Tho Valencia left San Francisco about 11 oclock on Satunlii last and heard no sound or saw no light pres nglng danger The officers wero run fling by dead reckoning and wero on I the outlook for Umatilla reef lightship when the steamer struck She wa hacked off after she struck but tim water filling tho engine room the fires wero extinguished and the engine crew forced out of the room although pot before the Valencia had been driven driv-en hard on the beach |
