Show NOTHING HAS BEEN FOUND TO OVERCOME IT T r blight has been known in this section for three years and baffles agriculturists from mondays standard the pear blight has done such a great amount of damage throughout the county thai the pear crop Is now looked upon as a complete failure so far nothing has been discovered that will destroy the blight without destroying the trees as well it was about three years ago that the blight was first discovered in this section of the country since which time it has ln creased now threatening the whole crop the blight first made its appearance in this section 0 the country in idaho and seems to be traveling south A special study of it has been made by some of the most learned men in the country with no success it Is as much of an enigma today as it was when it first put in an appearance lately the blight seems to have also affected the apple trees but so far it has done but little damage among the other things that have caused considerable worry among the pear and cherry growers Is what Is known as the pear and cherry slug a dark slimy green larvae with a big head which feed on the leaves turning them brown in spots there are two broods in a year of the slug one appearing in june or early in july the other in august the second brood usually does the most damage and where numerous enough will strip an entire tree and kill it the larvae grow to be about a bait inch long and they go into the ground and pupate coming out a black fly like insect this slug Is easily gotten rid of however by the uso of a spray with paris green or lime arsenic as soon as tha damage is noticed one spraying usually kill them when the fruit is nearly ripe the trees may be dusted with white hellebore instead or dry air slacked lime A new worm that has recently made its appearance which affects the shade trees is a long green cut worm which can be overcome by the use of the spray given above if made of double strength the white fly which is reported to be damaging the beet crop is not ag yet very numerous in weber county A spray of kerosene emulsion it is claimed will kill this pest for the green worm which also attacks the beets a spray of paris green has proven quite effective when the beet plants are first attacked the leaves curl up at the ends and it Is at this time that the spraying should be done the eggs of these insects appear as small warts on the beet leaves which should not be sprayed until they are hatched out seem to be such a serious one it Is claimed that they may be prevented from coming in by sprinkling a mixture of one pound of parla green or arsenic to about 20 pounds ot bran along some distance from the margins mixing a little sugar or molasses with the bran will help to attract them to it the tomato crop Is also being greatly reduced by the tomato blight which Is believed to be due to the climatic conditions the tomato plant being a sensitive one cannot withstand the severe changes such as experienced during the early part ot the present season it Is claimed that by planting the tomato vines where they will bo shielded from the sun during the hottest part of the day will overcome the trouble HAD BAD SHIPS 30 according to the st petersburg correspondent of la lib erac admiral in his report on the battle ol 01 straits which resulted in the practical annihilation hi of his fleet says his ships were bad they had been not only hastily but dishonestly built the thickness of the armor did nat agree with the official figures in the case 0 any of the vessels moreover it was of inferior quality the shells were bad two thirds ot them did not explode none of the ships were able to carry the necessary coal none of them attained the guaranteed speed the engines and boilers were poor and always required repairs two thirds of the brewa including those of vice admiral squadron were incapable gunners were ignorant of the elementary laws of firing A mutiny occurred while the fleet was at madagascar and fourteen men were put to death had to train bis guns on two ot the ships the admiral and the admiral coast defense bessels fes sels to restore order the crews had decided secretly to surrender to the enemy was discovered too late there was another mutiny in vice admiral squadron near formosa and had daib culty in preventing the mutineers muti from seizing the greater part of the squadron saw from the outset of the battle that the admiral and the admiral wre not fighting and were ignoring orders they only fired when he sent torpedo boats to them and threatened to sink them unless they obeyed it had not been mounded at the begin ning of the battle the result might have been almost simultaneously with his removal to a torpedo boat admiral enquist disappeared admiral Foelker sahm was killed and admiral Nebo gatoff who was unpopular with the sailors was obliged to take command then the rout began orders were ignored it was every one for himself the crews of some of the ships threatened to kill the officers unless they surrendered confirms what Is generally known of the of tho fleet he describes an attempt ito blow up the orel after she had surrendered he says a party of engineers and young officers were surprised by the japanese just as they were about to fire the ships magazine A struggle followed it the dorels crew bad supported the officers the conspiracy would have succeeded but nona of the men stirred the tho reports al ready published that he relied on the fog to enable him to get through the straits but says it lifted two hours too fiola |
