Show regulations FOR SHIPMENT OF LIVESTOCK washington july 28 regulations for the shipment of live stock under the twenty eight hour law in the mat ter of feed and rest of stock in transit were completed today by the agriculture the recommendations as to the departments attitude on abs tbs question were prepared by dr D E salmon chief odthe bureau of animal industry and approved by secretary wison are as follows the statute provides the shipment p live stock without unloading en route under certain conditions I 1 have investigated the subject and would respectfully recommend that the department approve as being in compliance with the statute all shipments of cattle in transit for more than awen ty eight consecutive hours made under the following conditions first that the cars containing the cattle shall be equipped with hay racks each lineal foot of which shall have a capacity of not less than one cubic toot extending aloa the sides of the cars from the doors to the end and that the cars shall be so arranged that the racks may be readily filled with hay through openings in the car roof second that tha cars shall be fitted with semi cylindrical watering troughs of galvanized or cast iron not jess than fifteen inches deep by top bilde measurement with rue inner erne curved to retain the water and filling the trough is to be placed in proper positions along the sides of the cars and extend from the doors to the end all troughs to be so arranged that they can be readily filled with water and emptied on the outside of the car and the troughs to be kept free from all litter and filth third AA water to be supplied at intervals not exceeding awen ty eight hours while the shipments are in transit and n supplying gatei each car to be stopped for at least five minutes during which time the troughs shall be kept filled clear water and all the animals given an opportunity port unity to drink fourth in order hat the cattle may have Bum clent space and opportunity to rest the cars shall no be overloaded and in all shipments there shall be room in each car for at least one third of the cattle to lie down at the same time the number of head of cattle that may be carried in a thirty alx foot car is shown in the following table according to the live weight average live weight for 36 toofe cars 23 22 21 1000 20 1100 i 19 1200 18 1 1300 17 1400 16 1500 16 1600 14 1700 13 1800 12 |
