Show twenty seven new cases of fever reported to board of of cisterns expected to stop the disease new orleans july 31 much distress is begian lug to appear among the italian population growing out ot the practical expulsion of the fruit business from louisiana on account 0 the quarantines and relict work is bohe of the tasks which the italian societies and citizens committees will now have to address themselves to while the six day detention order ot the board of health lasts it Is expected that all the lines which have been op crated from tho steamers into new orleans will divert their ships to mobile and this will have the effect of throwing a number of thousands of laborers many ot them italians out tatt employment the average italian here ha a dozen in his family and sometimes the children number ten or more and with that many to teed tho head of the family cannot long remain la idleness without an appeal to public charity under the circumstances these italians who are not in the fever district are asking that they be given employment by tho health authorities in the sanitary and bolher work now going on in order that they may not become public charges A meeting of representative italians has been held and permanent organization formed A campaign of relief and of education into the hygienic requirements of the situation has been decided on it also resolved to follow the advice telegraphed by ambassador mayer dea Pl anches to address all italians in the city by circular ask ing them to pay ready obedience to the regulations imposed by the health authorities several thousand dollars have been raised for relief and other work all the societies having decided to abandon the banquets and other entertainments hey bad planned and apply the funds beet aside for these purposes in helping their countrymen in the present emergency the health authorities are very much encouraged by the excellent work that is being done at the emergency hospital and they believe that when the results of treatment given there become known families will readily consent to have their patients sent there while the situation there Is constantly growing more hopeful there Is no abatement of the excitement and panicky feeling in the country districts local merchants are beginning to feel the effects cf the care they are receiving kettere from traveling men telling of the cancellation of orders in mississippi and elsewhere because of the reluctance of the country people to patronize stores which are receiving goods from infected districts in this connection there Is some criticism of governor vardaman because ot a telegram in which he commended mississippi merchants in refusing to take freight from this city steps have been taken to disinfect all freight cars destined for points where the mosquito theory Is not accepted quarantines everywhere are being drawn k tighter even gasoline is being partly barred from vicksburg numbers of the towns in louisiana and mississippi are cutting themselves off from the world the shotgun quarantines are i extending |
