Cancer Socf Misconceptions about cancer QUESTION: If you nurse a baby do you decrease your chances of developing breast cancer? ANSWER: I wish I could answer yes to that question but there is no evidence to support it. This is one of the very common misconceptions about cancer. A recent study by the National Cancer Institute shows that 33 percent of us believe that nursing will decrease chances of getting this type of cancer. There are some other misconceptions that you might be interested in. The NCI study showed that 68 percent of those surveyed mistakenly believed that taking birth control pills increased their risk of breast cancer. Not true. Several hypotheses were tested and it was found that women: -Fear breast cancer more than any other disease. -Underestimate the number of cases of breast cancer. -Blacks and Hispanics are more concerned than white females about changes breast cancer will bring into their lives. -Who practice breast self-examination self-examination monthly have received instructions from a doctor or nurse.
