The bank will officially open Wednesday Winner named in new bank contest "Basin State Bank" was the winning entry in the name the bank contest sponsored by directors of a new locally-owned locally-owned Vernal bank. There were 401 entries in the contest and 26 had the winning name. The winner was determined by earliest postmark after -; contest announcement. Kaye Anderson, manager of the Gateway Lounge on East Highway 40 was declared the winner last week and ' was presented a $500 savings account in the new Basin State Bank. The most popular name in the contest was Uintah with 43 entries. Ashley Valley followed with 40 entries, Vernal had 31 entries and Dinosaur or Dinosaurland received 29 entries. The official opening of the new bank has been set for April 1. The bank, is located at 363 East Main. President of the new bank is Dan W. Turner, vice president is Bruce Watkins. Both will devote full time to the operation of the bank. in a temporary mobile structure on 363 East Main. Assisting in the award presentation at the entrance of the new bank structure are Bruce Watkins, vice president, Karen Sursa, teller and Dan W. Turner, president. Watkins returned to Vernal March 15 after being away for the past 23 years. He and his wife LaRue lived in Salt Lake City for seven years before moving to Sunset where he has been working for Clearfield State Bank as manager of their Sunset Branch. Watkins presently is a Sunset City Councilman serving as Finance Director and Mayor Protem. He has been a member of the David County School Board and is a past president of the Clearfield Chamber of Commerce and past president of the Clearfield Kiwanis Club. Bruce graduated from Uintah High School in 1943 and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force later that year. He served two years as a pilot during World War II. Upon returning to Vernal he began working for Uintah State Bank which -was later sold to First Security Bank. His duties began as teller during those 12 years and was the manager of First Security Installment Loan Department when he left in 1958. Since leaving Vernal, Bruce graduated from the Colorado School of Banking at the University of Colorado and is also a graduate of University of Washington School of Banking. He served on the Board of Directors the South Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce and was president of the North Utah Chapter of the American Institute of Banking in 1971-72. The A.I.B. is the educational arm of banking. LaRue is the daughter of Erma and Alex Sessions and they have four children and eight grandchildren, all living in the Sunset-Clearfield area. |
