Show Region 11 teams were wiped out in the first round of the l-A State Tournament on March 18 as all seven teams were defeated and the only teams from Region 11 to place in the tournament were Duchesne, the region's fourth place team and Wendover, the region's seventh place team. North Rich, Region ll's first place -team, was upset by the seventh place crew from Escalante, 68 to 54, in the first round. The second place team from Region 11 and a one-time number one ranked team, Tintic, was massacred by the Piute team, 77 to 41, in the first round. Altamount, the third place team from Region 11, was knocked knock-ed off by Beaver, 65 to 47. Kanab downed down-ed Wendover, 54 to 45 and Panguitch downed Duchesne, 59 to 52. Valley defeated Region ll's fifth place team, Dugway and Monticello downed North Summit, the sixth place team from ' Region 11. North Rich, Tintic and Altamont were the top three teams from Region 11, but two of the teams stayed at the tourney for only two days and the other crew spent three days at the state meet. Wendover knocked Altamont out of the tourney, 56 to 48 and Duchesne sent North Rich home early due to a 78 to 74 loss. Tintic blasted Whitehorse, 67-46, but was defeated by Wendover. Duchesne and Wendover emerged as the winners in the battle between seven Region 11 teams and one Region 10 crew in the consolation bracket. Duchesne edged Wendover for the consolation con-solation title, 65 to 63, and placed sixth. Duchesne finished fourth behind North Rich, Tintic and Altamont in the region meet, but pocketed the highest finish of any Region 11 team at the state meet. Wendover just barely made it to the state tournament as they qualified when they captured seventh place, which was the final spot in the state meet from Region 11. Wendover ended up placing and five teams from Region 11 didn't place. The Duchesne Eagles were in first place for most of the season in Region ll's Division Three, but they dropped an overtime game to the Longhorns in Altamont and were downed by Altamont Alta-mont in a playoff for first place at Union High School in Roosevelt. Duchesne nipped South Rich by two points and North Summit by one point in the region round robin to qualify for the state meet. The Eagles downed Dugway by three points in the battle for fourth place. The Eagles dropped a 59 to 52 loss to Panguitch in the first round. However, the Duchesne Eagles regrouped and knocked off the first place team from Region 11, North Rich, 78 to 74 and downed Dugway, 67 to 59. Duchesne placed sixth and won the consolation crown when they edged Wendover, 65 to 63. After the losses to Altamont the Duchesne crew w on six of its next seven games and posted a 6-0 record against Region 11 opponents and had a record of 6-1. Uintah Basin fans had two universities, univer-sities, Utah and Brigham Young University, to root for in the NCAA national na-tional tournament and both teams turned turn-ed in outstanding performances. The University of Utah had a bye in the first round and then advanced to the West Regional semi-finals in Salt Lake City when they massacred Northeastern, Nor-theastern, 94 to 69. Utah dropped a 61 to 56 setback to North Carolina, Thursday and North Carolina won the Western Regional championship when they blasted Kansas State, 82 to 68. BYU advanced to the east Regional championship game when they toppled Princeton, massacred college basketball basket-ball power, UCLA and nipped Notre Dame, 51 to 50, with a last second field goal by Danny Ainge. Uintah Basin fans had a lot to be happy hap-py about in the first half as BYU had a 33 to 30 over Virginia, which had been ranked number one in the country for a good part of the regular season. The Cougars had a seven point lead three times in the first half, but Virginia's 7'4" center, Ralph Sampson and company com-pany shattered the dreams of the BYU fans as they outscorcd the Cougars, 44 to 27 in the second half and won the championship, Saturday, 74 to 60. The turning point of the game was when Virginia gained a five-point play in the second half. Sampson slammed in a missed shot by Virginia and Ainge was called for a technical foul when he said Sampson grabbed the rim two or three times. Virginia put in the foul shot and scored a field Roal, which gave them a 39 35 lead. BYU had a 35 34 lead before the two pointer by Sampson. |
