I 4 , . - ' ' x CRACKING SKIN on the Stegosaurus model in front of the Dinosaur Quarry Visitor's Center is caused by temperature fluctuations. Quarry dinosaur gets new covering That's one way to skin a dinosaur. Although dinosaurs are best known as large and often fierce, tough-skinned creatures, dinosaur models are more sensitive. In fact, the Stegosaurus model (plated lizard) at Dinosaur National Monument's Quarry Visitor Center has developed "skin problems." The life-sized model is constructed of two layers of fiberglass. According to park paleontologist, Dan Chure, temperature fluctuations, especially those during summer days, cause repeated expansion and contraction of the fiberglass, and after years of this exposure the Stegosaurus is now cracked over 75 percent of its surface. If not corrected, the model will ultimately be destroyed. Design Center of Salt Iake City was recently awarded a contract from the National Park Service to fill the craks and apply a more flexible "skin" to reduce cracking in the future. The project began last week and was completed last Saturday. The model, which sets at the front entrance to the Visitor Center, was made by Jonas Studios, Inc. for exhibit at the 1964 World's Fair in New York City. In 1970 the Atlantic Richfield Company donated it to the Monument. During the last 1 1 years it has greeted over 4 million visitors and starred in thousands of vacation snapshots. With its new "skin" Ms. Stegosaurus will continue to greet millions more in the future. |
