Show Uintah High School to present musical by Rae Dawn Olbert Uintah High, School students will present "The Sound of Music" Nov. 19, 20, 21 and 23 at the Uintah High School auditorium. It was extremely hard casting parts, according to Claire Spencer, the high school drama teacher. Over 55 students tried out for the musical, many being recalled three or four times before the cast was chosen. Heidi LeBeau, a senior, will portray Maria, and Doug. Shaw, also a senior, will portray Captain Von Trapp. Other major parts will be played by , Ruth Williams, Greg Robbins, Misty Mills, Markay Caldwell and Donny Sawyer. Miss Spencer, the stage director, proudly said, "We have one of the best casts ever. They'll do us proud!" The musical depicts the true life story of the Von Trapp family. The story unfolds in Austria at the time of the second World War, before Austria became part of the Nazi Empire. It tells of a young woman, Maria, who leaves a convent to become governess to the seven children of widowed Captain Von Trapp. She finds the children lonely for an often absent father, but Maria makes them smile again and brings happiness to the household, and when the Captain returns, Maria and he fall in love. As with all good romances, there are problems an extra fiancee, Maria's own committment to the convent and the threat of the Nazi's taking over Austria. Unwilling to stay in Austria and be dominated by the Nazi's, the family flees, aided by the convent nuns. The stage version is slightly different from the play. Some songs are added, other dropped, so even people who have seen the movie will find the stage version a new experience. But the favorites are included, such as "The Sound of Music," "Climb Every Mountain," "Do Re Mi," and "16 Going on 17." The musical direction will be by Reed Hansen, the high school choral teacher. The choreography will be done by Miss Spencer and the dance teacher, Cathy Price. "People will go away singing," said Mr. Hansen. |
