Show Swimming meet set for Saturday at Vernal pool Vernal, Rangely, Meeker, Price and Park City will compete in a swim meet, Saturday at the Vernal Community Pool from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The purpose of the meet is to get Vernal swimmers ready for AAU competition and to gain experience. The public is invited to attend the meet. Parents of the swimmers and concerned citizens are now certifying ' as stroke judges. There will be clinics held to certify people as referees, judges, scorers, timers and recorders. It takes 36 officials to run a meet. Although the pool doesn't have all the equipment needed to qualify the meet as an AAU meet it will be run as close to AAU standards as possible. Vernal swim learn members will participate par-ticipate in a spook splash swimming marathon, October 31 from 9 a m. to 3 p.m. The purpose of the swim-a-thon is to raise money for pool needs such as stop watches, lane ropes, starting blocks and other items. Approximately $4500 is needed to get the necessary AAU equipment. People who are interested in signing up for the marathon are urged to call the pool or sign up at the marathon. There will be refreshments sold in the lobby. Another new program is the mileage marathon. There will be contests between bet-ween business in a mileage swim. The company that swims the most laps will win a traveling trophy. The trophy will beawarnVd each month. Interested businesses are a:-ked to contact the swimming pool. The purpose of the competition is to raise money for the SAim team. During the first month of competition the ac-quatic ac-quatic boosters would like businesses to challenge otht-r businesses and the loser of the challenge would donate one dollar per mile swam by the winning business. The Vernal Chamber of Commerce has challenged other Chambers of Com merce in surrounding communities to see which Chamber can swim the most : miles. A scuba diving class will take place at the Vernal Community Pool on November 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21. The class will be taught by the Thunder Island divers. All equipment will be furnished. fur-nished. There will be class room time and open water swimming. The cost is $175 and the age limit is 15 years old. For more information contact George Millecam at 789-5775. The Aquatic Boosters is an organization organiza-tion that helps support the Vernal swim team and water ballet team. The group is sponsoring fund raising projects for the teams. People who are interested in joining the club are asked to contact the pool at 789-5775. Winter swimming lessons and adult swimming lessons are being held at the pool. The starting dates are November 15, January 15, February 15, March 15 and April 15. The October program began last Thursday. |
