Pat Jenkins hit Joe Lance for a 47 yard touchdown with three minutes left in the game to give . the Utes a victory over the Carbon Dinos. Uintah didn't have any completed passes until the fourth quarter and the Utes gained all their passing yardage in . the final quarter. The Uintah crew passed for 57 yards and Carbon nabbed ' 76 yards. The Dinos were 7 out of 18. Both completed passes were gained during the Utes' scoring drive. Jenkins hit Mike Johnson for a ten yard pass, which placed the Utes on the 50 yard line and a 47 yard aerial to Lance gained gain-ed a touchdown and a victory for the Utes. Uintah connected on only two passes, but they totalled 57 yards and produced a win for the Uintah crew. Uintah acquired 82 percent of its passing pass-ing yardage on one play. Both the passes took place during third down situations. Greg Limb advanced ad-vanced the ball to the 40 yard line on a punt and Jenkins carried the ball two yards to the 42. However, Clark Emery was pushed back to the 40 and the Utes were faced with a third down and ten yards to go situation. Uintah gained the first down as Jenkins hit Johnson at the 50 yard line. A pass by Randy Smuin was incomplete and Smuin carried the ball three yards to the 47. Uintah was in a third down and seven yards to go situation, but the Utes gained the first down and a touchdown with a 47 yard touchdown pass to Lance. Uintah rushed for 88 yards in the game and Carbon gained 47 yards. The Utes had 145 total yards and Carbon had 123. The Utes had six first downs in the contest and netted two of the six first downs in the touchdown drive. Carbon Car-bon had 13 first downs. The Mud Bowl took place in Vernal on September 25 and the event was so popular that Mud Bowl was held in the Uintah-Provo football game Thursday. The Utes wore white jerseys in the game with the Provo Bulldogs, but after a number of puddle encounters . they became brown. Football players had problems catching cat-ching and kicking the slippery pigskin. Randy Smuin had one kick blocked, but he got off a number of outstanding kicks even with the wet conditions. The muddy conditions didn't seem to bother Provo quarterback, Sean Covey as he completed 11 out of 19 passes for 218 yards. Union had something to celebrate about as the Cougars gained their first region victory of the year due to a 6 to 0 triumph over the Emery Spartans. The Cougars completely dominated the game as they were deep in Spartan territory ter-ritory many times, but penalties destroyed the scoring chances. Tracy McMullin scored the only touchdown in the ball game on a 51 yard run. "I scored on a sweep around the left end and we had good blocking, which broke me open. I was able to break one or two tackles and go all the way for the touchdown. I was just praying pray-ing that no one would out run me," stated McMullin. Union's Eddie Martinez scored a touchdown for the Cats in the second quarter but a holding penalty wiped it out. "We played some good offense, but we had too many penalties. We have to work on that. It's nice to get a region win," remarked Martinez. The Cougars' quarterback in the game was sophomore, Chad Richard and he remarked, "We had some good blocking and McMullin had a good run. We couldn't get the touchdowns when we got down close, but we got the touchdown we needed." When asked to comment on the victory vic-tory by the Cougars, Jay Omer, Union head football coach, said, "We were just pleased with our whole defensive effort. They kept us in the ball game. McMullin broke two tackles on his way to the end zone for a touchdown. We were lucky he broke those two tackles or we could have easily been 0-0 and still out there playing. Our offensive blocking was good all day long. Dean Townsend got a block nt goal line on a guy that might have gotten McMullin and Dye got a good block on the line of scrimmage to spring McMullin." Omer added, "We looked pretty good on offense except for the penalties. We were deep in Emery territory many times but a penalty here or there hurt us. Our quarterback, Richard likes to throw the ball and he threw it very well considering the wet weather conditions. Martinez had a pretty good day and our fullback, Cook blocked well."" The Union-Finery game was a wet encounter, but playing conditions weren't as bad as the Uintah Provo game. The rnin started coming down at a faster pace in the second half so Jay Omer's daughter darted on to the field and gave her dad, Union's coach, an umbrella so that he wouldn't get wet. |
